I've read a startling amount of books about habits and personal development -- and I can honestly, genuinely say that this is the BEST book I've ever read on that subject. This book not only explains the nuts and bolts of why habits work and how you can use that knowledge (I had several "aha" moments, while reading this part) but also has a very thorough and extensive list of 97 habits that you can implement in your daily life. In all of my reading, I've NEVER seen another book like this.Everything is written in a very clear and easy to understand manner, and was perfectly edited and VERY professional. While reading, you can really tell that, unlike so many other "self help gurus", S.J. really cares about your personal success -- and is willing to do everything in his power to help you get there.S.J. has done an amazing job with "Habit Stacking", and I will surely be going back to it over and over again as I embark on my own habits journey. If you're serious about bettering your own life, I would highly recommend you get your own copy of "Habit Stacking. You WON'T regret it.

You could improve your life greatly with a few small changes. I like that. For most people, even if they dream of BIG changes, it proves too difficult to accomplish. For instance many people try a diet and fail, whereas just by adding vegetables to start their meal, they could accomplish some significant progress. I strongly believe in that. A friend of mine says that a farmer who carries his newborn calf every day can still carry it six months later. On the other hand, the book lists things we can do in a way that is not convincing, mostly because the choices proposed by the author are a bit dull and the amount of time he allows for each activity does not sound right. The sum of what the author proposes (the 97 ideas) would already take you over eight hours a day.I hope there will be a second edition, with more research, interviews, and more interesting ideas, because on the bottom line, habits are the stuff that we are made of.

I must admit I bought this book because of the good reviews. I am very much a "I can always improve" or "do it better" kinda girl so I look for inspiration in books, blogs, audio etc. So I hungrily bought the 9 Small Life Changes....Now that I have read it....I am ANGRY. What a waste of money!I found most of the book how to make these small changes pretty basic stuff. If it was a 99 cent book I wouldn't complain, but I found most of the habits common knowledge items. Here are 5 of Mr. Scott's "small life changes" for example:#55 Collect Dirty Laundry#69 Practice Simple Grooming#84 Brush your Tongue#85 Microwave your SpongeYou get the idea.BLUF The author got my $7 don't let him take yours.....

In this Amazon Best-Selling ebook HABIT STACKING by S.J. Scott, the author delivers 97 small but effective habits to integrate into your daily life…in 5 minutes or less. The book HABIT STACKING: 97 SMALL LIFE CHANGES THAT TAKE 5 MINUTES OR LESS covers seven critical areas that really do need habits in order for us to gain the most out of and make improvements in our day to day living. The areas Steve covers are:PRODUCTIVITY [HABITS #1-17]RELATIONSHIPS [HABITS#18-31]FINANCES [HABITS#32-44]ORGANIZATION [HABITS#45-60]SPIRITUALITY AND MENTAL WELL-BEING [HABITS#61-75]HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS [HABITS#76-85]LEISURE [HABITS#86-97]Now, a lot of the habits listed in this book are simple common sense “no-brainers” and that most people are conscious of what needs to be done in their lives even if they aren’t doing everything they could be. Steve mentions this in the conclusion section Having said that, it is nice to have these habits as “small reminders” lest we forget the little things that make big differences if practiced over time And, that is what this book focuses on: doing the little things a little bit each day over an extended period of time that add up to effective changes being moulded into your daily life. In the beginning of the book Steve introduces readers to the concept of “Big Doors Swing On Small Hinges.” You can get a lot accomplished by doing the little things that matter in just a few minutes a day. It’s a great quote by W. Clement Stone and I think it fits in perfectly with this book, and encompasses the theme of Habit Stacking.Just reading this book through from start to finish gives people some good ideas for incorporating new habits into their lives; you might close the book, say “Well, that was interesting. Next?” But if you do, you ‘ll be missing out on the point of the program. i actually read through it twice to make sure I had grasped what exactly it is that I was reading. The first read I thought it was a book on 97 habits to make life better, happier, and all that usual stuff. But after the second read it hit me that what this is is a program. The “97 Habits” discussed stand as examples you can include if you desire. For example, in the section on Health and Nutrition, there are some good pointers such as stretching in the morning, making a smoothie or taking vitamins. You could replace this with doing push-ups, deep breathing exercises, or eating a tomato first thing in the morning. Again, in the book it says: “Focus on the Routine and not the Habit.” I think this sums it up.Habit Stacking is more than just a compilation of habits; its a system of taking action and that, once you have established your own “Habit Stack” routine, you can swap out various habits for new ones. Once a habit has become “second nature” its time to let it live on its own and decide on a new habit.I believe that for the categories this book is based on, although Steve gives us about 15 habits for each one, there are probably hundreds you could come up with on your own. Once I finished this book I started brainstorming all the other "5 minute habits or less” possibilities and for each section I could map out well over fifty additional habits. Now I have loads of habits for building a stack for Morning, Evening, At Work, In the Car, Taking Breaktime, etc...One other thing I like about this book [and others by Steve Scott] is the introduction to the various apps and other sites that are available, for example the lift app for holding yourself accountable, Evernote for note taking [and tons more!] or Remember the Milk for making a daily list. They go together well with the material and can serve as strong companions throughout the day when you are on the move. Finally HABIT STACKING is a continuous process that requires a lot of discipline but, as the book stresses, that discipline doesn’t have to be swallowed in one sitting. Take it day by day, work your small tasks into every minute you have available, and monitor the progress made.I look forward to building up my HABIT STACKS over the course of the next few months…and far beyond!

There's some good advice here, but I was a bit put off by the idea that I should use the author's list of 97 habits for my habit stacking instead of my own list. A little less assumption that readers don't know themselves, or how to be healthy or productive, would feel less condescending. Most readers, I'm sure, would rather change the habits we feel a need to, not make ourselves over as copies of the author. However the idea of stacking habits that one wants to acquire in a way that they flow one into another, and understanding triggers for good habits (as well as bad habits), are helpful, as are some other tips in this book. I'm sure anyone would benefit from learning these techniques. That said, the book could have been shorter and sold as an article rather than a book and have provided all the new insights that I got from this book.

Excellent splat book. Many useful additions to the Pathfinder rules, from new feats to weapon modifications to the VERY useful equipment packages. Will be using this heavily in my future campaigns.

This was a great supplement, lots of tools, tricks, and new rules to help a player or gamemaster build anything gear-wise they can imagine. Very close to being a must-have for Pathfinder fans. I especially enjoyed the new equipment tricks, concoctions (and random mix effect table), and poppet constructs (/familiars).

wish it had more.

Awesome

Some amazing additions. Especially love the alchemical items. Using the Alchemical Arrows rules for Bolts is really going to help my characters

gift

As a young father who has largely avoided the litany of parenting books on the market, I didn't know what to expect from John Medina's "Brain Rules for Baby." Purchased on a whim at the recommendation of a friend, the book sat on my shelf, unread, for several months until I realized that my somewhat laissez-faire style of parenting probably wasn't in the best interests of my children - my 15-month-old son and a baby daughter in the oven. Devouring its contents in about a week, I am very glad I had this epiphany sooner than later.Despite being a "developmental molecular biologist" by trade, Medina is a refreshingly savvy writer, opting to avoid much of the jargon that would make the book impenetrable for the untrained layman like me. The book is divided into five clear, topical sections:- Pregnancy (how to help your baby develop while in utero)- Relationship (how to avoid the relationship pitfalls many couples experience post-partum)- Smart Baby (how to optimize your child's brain development and intelligence)- Happy Baby (how to raise a happy, well-balanced child)- Moral Baby (how to help your child develop and nurture their moral compass)Medina does his best to base his recommendations on robust scientific research, which is a plus. As he states early in the introduction, "To gain my trust, research must pass my `grump factor.' To make it into this book, studies must first have been published in the refereed literature and then successfully replicated . . . Where I make an exception for cutting-edge research, reliable but not yet fully vetted by the passage of time, I will note it" (pp. 3). You can tell that he was very careful about choosing what material to include, later citing his distaste for research based on, "shoddy designs, biased agendas, lack of controls, non-randomized cohorts, too-few sample sizes, too few experiments - and lots of loud, even angry, opinions" (pp. 143). Medina knows his statistics, which makes it easier for me to trust that the recommendations he presents in the text have a solid foundation.Perhaps inevitably, it's hard to read a book like this and not feel somewhat inadequate and/or guilty - especially if you already have kids. I couldn't help but think of how much TV I've already let my little boy watch, how much more I should be talking with him to bolster his language acquisition, etc. Fortunately, Medina readily admits that the ideal is not going to be the reality when it comes to parenting: "A family based on every suggestion in this book is fantasy" (pp. 254). Being a parent has its own learning curve, and we're never going to perfectly implement best practices. But if reading this book only makes me a _slightly_ better parent, it will still have been worth it.So why not five stars? As much as I appreciate Medina's "grump factor" in filtering out unreliable data, there are two important topics I felt should have received much more coverage, considering their relative importance in a child's development: nutrition and music. Aside from nutritional imperatives for pregnant mothers, Medina has surprisingly little to say about nutrition beyond the breastfeeding stage. Perhaps he thought nutrition, one of the most controversial subjects out there, was intuitive? As for music, Medina has a bit more to say, but I have mixed feelings about how he presented it. I counted only a couple instances where Medina had something positive to say about the effect of music on a child's development, and in both cases music is cited as helping children better perceive others' emotions, increasing their "ability to establish and maintain friendships" (pp. 273). That's it for the positive; otherwise, Medina is fairly snarky in his dismissal of pro-music research, such as the idea that playing classical music will have a positive effect on a child's development. While I respect his good intentions to clear up erroneous myths, I fear that parents might walk away from this book believing that music is non-essential at best, irrelevant at worst - a tragic conclusion either way, in my opinion.Admittedly, I have a bias: I was raised by a mother who has been an advocate for music education and has proclaimed the positive effects of music on the brain for as long as I can remember (she even wrote a book on it: "Good Music Brighter Children"). Music has always been a major part of my life, and I intend to make it a priority with my own children. Considering Medina's admittance early on that, "Most of the data we have [regarding baby brain development is] associative, not causal," (pp. 7) it seems rather irresponsible for him to dismiss much of the positive research regarding music and brain development so flippantly. While music is certainly not a cure-all, I have good reason to believe, both from anecdotal experience and from the positive research I have read, that the effect of music on the brain goes far beyond simply helping children better perceive others' emotions.Despite my qualms, I would still highly recommend this book for prospective parents. What Medina left out does not invalidate what he included. There are some really excellent, practical ideas that all parents could benefit from (the book even closes with a "Practical Tips" chapter that breaks down much of the research into applicable chunks). While I am not an expert on "essential" parenting books, I am inclined to keep Medina's work within arm's length as I work on raising my young children.

This is one of my favorite thing to give to new/expecting parents & grandparents. It's incredibly well written and edited. I don't know a lot of science based texts (and this is VERY scientifically sound writing) that I would call a "page turner," but that is exactly what this is. The word "rules" in the title turns a lot of people off, understandably - babies don't need rules - but I assure you that there are NO rules of anytype in the way it comes across. It's a fascinating read that I wish was required reading! All OBs should give this to first time parents at their first appointment!

This book was a terrific read, and it offers simple ideas on how to help your baby develope. Shocker here - it promotes lots of things that DON'T involve buying expensive DVDs or toys. I can't say more without letting you get away without reading it... I loved that it discussed the science behind his suggestions, and that things weren't preachy or judgemental (as many of the baby development guides and parenting books out there are.)

This book is great. It helped me (a new dad) understand a lot of the emotional/physical changes my wife is going through and prepared me for some conflicts that were sure to arise. The book also delves into the science of how a baby develops and gives pointers (back with studies) on how promote healthy development. I plan on purchasing a copy for my brother as well.I was also lucky enough to catch a presentation by the author during a conference in California. Great information!

Our group is starting an educational pre-natal clinic for expectant mothers and fathers to teach them how to jump start their baby's brain and learning. We will use this small book as one of our teaching aids. We also have lots of the work by Glenn Doleman, as well. I reared such a child and she was a Duke Tip scholar (Duke University) at age 13 and in Europe studying at 15. By age 30 she had been to 35 foreign countries on her own and taught school classes in some of them.

This book is amazing about telling you how baby's thinks all the way up until there 5 years old. I mean I have two girls and one of them are 5 years old, And most of the things that it talks about I'm going throw right now with my 5 year old I really wish that I could have read this way before I had my first. But its one the best book that I have read!

This book is incredible. I'm generally quite skeptical of these types of books - it's just hard to be one size fits all, and unfortunately most "how to parent" books end up being too generic to be helpful. This one is different. I love that the first chapter (after the pregnancy chapters) focuses on the relationship between the parents. It's such an important topic, but SO rarely discussed. After that, the chapters start to shift to advice for parenting. Each chapter focuses on a premise, what comprises or influences that premise, and then the data that supports it (i.e. I want a happy child, here are the things we know/believe to be true about what drives happiness, here's how the research/data would suggest you go about interacting with your child to help him/her attain/learn the thing(s) that drives happiness). It's my favorite book my far.

I bought this book used from the seller and am excited to say that it arrived in excellent condition with a personalized note I find to be extremely fascinating and easy to follow. Great for anybody with a new baby or anybody that's interested in the developmental stages from in the womb to out in the New World.

This is an interesting and challenging book. It is written in a stream-of-consciousness style, with the accompanying lack of order as ideas occur to the author. PDKTF takes on tough topics that face high schoolers, especially if they don't fit into easy categories and cliques. Zoe is striving to find her gender identity, and is open about her feelings and experiences, so this is not necessarily a book for all readers. If a reader is offended by language and acts of growing students/adults, don't take this book on.

This weekend I finally got around to reading a book that an 8th grade studentrecommended to me before Christmas. Please Don't Kill The Freshman, by ZoeTrope. It's an autobiographical novel by a 15 yr old author. She details theprocess of writing the novel, publishing, public readings, and so on. It's sortof a book about writing the book. During the course of the year covered in thebook, she also questions her sexuality, savages the public school system, and tolerates her parents. The book does not begin well, at least, not for me. I read the first 4-5 pageshalf a dozen times over the months and just couldn't get into it. Yesterday onthe train for hours, I got through the beginning which just seemedwild, undisciplined, and aggressively adolescent. As the book progressed, herwriting style, her maturity, and my enjoyment of the book all grew at a steadyclip. I'm about 25 pages short of finishing the 300 page book. I'll finish ittoday, but I'm already convinced that I need to give this book to a few kids. Isee the audience for the book as two distinct groups. First, teens of a specialnature, gifted, talented, frustrated, but not exactly angst-ridden, should readthis book. Second, teachers and parents who deal with such children would gainconsiderable insight from this rare and personal glimpse into the real life and thought process ofan extraordinarily gifted and self-aware kid.The author is not at all a bad girl. She doesn't smoke or do drugs. She is notpromiscuous. She doesn't get pregnant. She reminds me of just a handful ofgirls I've known over the years. She definitely does exist. She has a filthymouth, an interest in experimenting with her (bi-?) sexuality, and a sense of"becoming"...something. I'll let you know if the last 25 pages do anything tochange my high opinion of the book.

One of my all time favorite books. I am glad I was able to find a hard copy. A little beat up, but nothing major.

Shipped fast and product was as expected.

Will you people stop yelling about how bad this book is? It was her Journal that she published so relax dudes.

I'm in high school, and I felt like the claim made on the back of the book ("I wrote a book about you...") was completely true.Does this intend to be the next great classic? No. Zoe Trope wrote what she felt and what she experienced. I, for one, loved it.

The dedication page at the beginning of Zoe Trope's latest work reads, "For my parents: This is all your fault." Feelings of dark humor and teen angst are apparent on this single page, and that is what PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN is all about. Following the first few pages, the reader quickly realizes that this is not a typical memoir. It is in fact a story within a story within a story. First, it is the story of a girl's first three years in high school --- featuring her motley crew of friends, her feelings toward high school, and her newfound yet uncertain sexuality. On this touchy topic, Zoe basically discovers that she can't help but fall in love with everyone, whether or not they are in love with her. Second, this is a guide to the world of book publishing and promotion. While Zoe deals with high school, she gets her book published. She also goes on weekend book tours and learns that many people like her book. This discovery unnerves Zoe and creates growing uncertainty. Readers soon find themselves wondering if this uncertainty will continue to plague Zoe for the remainder of the book. Third, this is a story about the beginning of a girl's awkward and sometimes dark journey through life. Zoe makes some shocking confessions and twisted, yet occasionally true, observations about life. There seems to be many questions as to whether this book is indeed a true account of a person's life or a parody of an alternate universe. It is up to the reader to decide. I found PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN to be weird and shocking, which made for an interesting reading experience. I strongly recommend however that only a mature audience read this book, as it contains strong language and sexual references. --- Reviewed by Sarah Sawtelle (...)

While some people have complaints about the rawness of this writing (as it is definitely not the most polished of Nawal El Saadawi's work), it is an amazing piece of Arab feminist writing, that addresses complex issues like female genital mutilation and prostitution. Strongly recommend this for anyone taking a class dealing with Arabic Culture (specifically in Egypt) or Women in the Arab World. It's important while reading to remember that the text was heavily edited by publishers and Saadawi herself to more palatable for the Western view, and that several chapters and passages condemning western culture have been removed, leading to a loss of several important themes and motifs.

As I read this short story of Firdaus a woman on Death Roll in Egypt, I was struck by the number of books that this brought to mind. The format a single reporter interview that tells a transformation story was in part like Interview with a Vampire orStory of Little Big Man .The tone of book reminds me of Camus the stranger , and also Celine’s Death on the Installment plan. Her philosophy on freedom about speaking truth in the face of your own execution no longer being fearful strongly reminded me of Anna Quangel and Otto Quangel story in Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada all excellent books so is this one rather short only a little over a hundred pages but I think it earned 5 stars for unique insight and message.

I had read many books about life of women in Afghanistan, life's of ordinary regular women of lower class. But this books description of the life of an orphan, of a prostitute gives you a completely different understanding of the gender problems in countries with poverty. It is a sad story, but it does mobilize you to do something for the gender issue, and it arouses your inner desire to be an activist. It's a pity the writer is already quiet advanced in age and never succeeded to be a politician in Egypt.Gender mainstreaming government should be for every country!

The story takes place in the early 1970s. The author, Dr. Saadawi is a psychiatrist and consultant for the women's prison. A young woman named Firdaus is scheduled to be executed for fatally stabbing her pimp. Thus far Firdaus has refused to speak to anyone, but Dr. Saadawi breaks through and thus a novel is born.Firdaus is born to a poor family. Her parents die and she goes to live with her perverted uncle. He gets married and wants to be rid of Firdaus so he sends her to boarding school. She finishes her secondary school exams placing 7th in all of Egypt. Her uncle and his wife decide that sending her to university would be a waste of time as there aren't that many job opportunities available. So, they marry her off to a sheik, who's supposed to be a real catch. He's plenty old enough to be her grandfather, and prone to tirades and violence that cause his repulsive facial sores to ooze pusty goo. Prior to this "arranged" marriage Firdaus contemplates escaping, but realizing how limited her options are acquiesces. Eventually, the marriage becomes unbearable and she flees only to be "rescued" by a pimp. She goes through a series of pimps, and one madam, before having a major epiphany.Firdaus realizes she has been selling herself short. Drastically raising her prostitution rate makes her a hot commodity. Being a product of American pop culture myself this came as no great surprise to me. After all, some of my compatriots have been known to spend as much as $50,000 for a handbag. This concept of setting the price too high in order to raise the product's perceived worth in the eyes of the consumer is known in the advertising industry as "prestige pricing."Firdaus sets herself up as a freelance pro. She has a nice apartment and picks and chooses her clients, and has free-time to pursue intellectual interests. Before long she has another major revelation after a male friend, whom she believes respects her as an astute liberated woman, lets her know that she's "just a whore." She then decides to get an "honest" 9 to 5 job working for the government. In doing so she must drastically reduce her standard of living. She is in for a rude awakening as she discovers the subculture of office politics. Not only did she make far more money as a prostitute she got more respect. Putting out is one of the unwritten rules of the job description.Coincidentally, two nights before I read this book I saw a TV show about one of Nevada's legal brothels. The pimp, or CEO, boasted that their top "girl" grossed half a million dollars last year. That's more than 10 times what the average teacher makes (if not for the union they would make even less) and five times that of a nurse practitioner (HMOs don't mind paying this because it's still far cheaper than hiring MDs). Firdaus' story takes place about 35 years ago and I know there have been a lot of positive changes since then, but I wonder how many of them are cosmetic. Two days after reading Firdaus' story I came across an article about the human organ "business." (Buying and selling organs is illegal in the US, but entrepreneurs circumvent this bete noire by charging "service" and "handling" fees. Organ procurers can strip a body much like a car, fetching $250,000 through legal channels!) In China harvesting death row inmates to sell their organs is reported to be a booming business. Regardless of how one feels about the death penalty, once profit is factored into the equation look out! So, if Firdaus were executed today in China her body could continue to be a commodity post-mortem.This novella bears uncanny similarities to Lao She's "Crescent Moon." It's a short story in an anthology by the same name. A widowed mother is forced to prostitute to support her daughter then the daughter ends up prostituting to support the mother. Neither of them is named but, the daughters observations are very similar to Firdaus', so similar I began to wonder if Saadawi has read "Crescent Moon." Lao She was a casualty of the Cultural Revolution in 1966.The motif of the stalking and judgemental green eyes can also be found in Li Ang's 1969 short story, "Curvaceous Dolls" that appears in The Colombia Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature edited by Joseph S.M. Lau and Howard Goldblatt. Li Ang also wrote The Butcher's Wife. "Curvaceous Dolls" is about a young wife's saphic longings, not unlike Firdaus' feelings for Miss Iqbal.

Reaffirmation of something I already learned, accepted, and sadly lived with... The true about the nature of men, marriage, and all the other morality invented by men to oppress women... Even now.

I demolished this book in a sitting. I loved it! It is a very sad story but questions how we value ourselves as women, how life can be inherently transactional and what values we hold important.

El Sadaawi's novel is a powerful, poetic, and poignantly evocative. You will breeze through this book in a day.

Best: writing is generally good. Worst: overly melodramatic and depressing.

There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky. And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent. If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

It's funny. I have started reading this book four times, and only finished it once. I couldn't tell you why I stopped those first three times. The ingredients were all there, I just wasn't hungry. Now, reading it for the fourth time, spending nearly all my free time doing so and finishing up in six days, well I just can't see why the hell I stopped in the first place. The Blade Itself is an immensely promising start to a trilogy that I have decide to read straight through without breaking for other books (something I've shied away from doing in the past year or so). The writing is sharp, the dialogue flows, the world is detailed and easily imagined, but what really sets this book apart for me is the characters. Abercrombie writes some damn good characters. Interesting and dynamic, even characters that I was sure I liked, my opinion of them could be turned completely around with one action, one thought. That makes for a fun reading experience, keeps you on your toes.As fun and fast-paced as The Blade Itself was at times, I still have the feeling that it was largely set-up for what is to come in this trilogy. I purchased Before They Are Hanged immediately upon finishing last night, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

I'm VERY picky about the fantasy genre. I'm even more picky when it comes to books that are not stand alone. That being said, this is a really great book. The characters span a huge variety of personalities and none of them seem like stereotypical fantasy archetypes. While it takes a bit to really pick up speed, it is beautifully written and has a lot of themes you don't see very often. So that being said, I'm definitely going to continue with this trilogy. Joe Abercrombie is incredibly talented. I would definitely recommend this book if you are picky with your fantasy and are looking for something a little different.

This is actually a 3.5 stars. This book wasn't bad at all, but wasn't the best either. I'm interested in seeing where it's going due to that spectacular ending! My problems weren't grammatical, it was the actual story. Literally, for 60% of the book, you have just been introduced to tons of characters and they are just doing normal, everyday stuff. At about 50% in, I was thinking, "What in the hell is the actual STORY???"...these people are just doing things. Then the last 35% of the book, it got really good and had some brutal action. And it did end on a note, that definitely sets up immediately book 2. And I finally knew the characters and what was going on.It was interesting enough to me, to definitely want to finish the trilogy. And I believe after I get the whole story, I have a feeling that this could be, possibly, a 4-star trilogy.... don't let me down book 2!!!3.5 stars

I wasn't sure about this one by the summary blurb, but I've read over half the first book and it is quite intriguing. There's some depth to the story and characters; it isn't nearly as predictable as many stories. Yes, some of the main characters are difficult to love, but so it is in real life no? They have layers and history, as does the setting and story.Edited to add: having read all three books now, I feel quite privileged to have found these gems and enjoyed them. The characters take some getting used to, the story takes a while to develop, but there's plenty of action to keep you happy while it does, and the payoff is well worth it. A thinking person's "epic fantasy".
