This is an interesting and challenging book. It is written in a stream-of-consciousness style, with the accompanying lack of order as ideas occur to the author. PDKTF takes on tough topics that face high schoolers, especially if they don't fit into easy categories and cliques. Zoe is striving to find her gender identity, and is open about her feelings and experiences, so this is not necessarily a book for all readers. If a reader is offended by language and acts of growing students/adults, don't take this book on.
This weekend I finally got around to reading a book that an 8th grade studentrecommended to me before Christmas. Please Don't Kill The Freshman, by ZoeTrope. It's an autobiographical novel by a 15 yr old author. She details theprocess of writing the novel, publishing, public readings, and so on. It's sortof a book about writing the book. During the course of the year covered in thebook, she also questions her sexuality, savages the public school system, and tolerates her parents. The book does not begin well, at least, not for me. I read the first 4-5 pageshalf a dozen times over the months and just couldn't get into it. Yesterday onthe train for hours, I got through the beginning which just seemedwild, undisciplined, and aggressively adolescent. As the book progressed, herwriting style, her maturity, and my enjoyment of the book all grew at a steadyclip. I'm about 25 pages short of finishing the 300 page book. I'll finish ittoday, but I'm already convinced that I need to give this book to a few kids. Isee the audience for the book as two distinct groups. First, teens of a specialnature, gifted, talented, frustrated, but not exactly angst-ridden, should readthis book. Second, teachers and parents who deal with such children would gainconsiderable insight from this rare and personal glimpse into the real life and thought process ofan extraordinarily gifted and self-aware kid.The author is not at all a bad girl. She doesn't smoke or do drugs. She is notpromiscuous. She doesn't get pregnant. She reminds me of just a handful ofgirls I've known over the years. She definitely does exist. She has a filthymouth, an interest in experimenting with her (bi-?) sexuality, and a sense of"becoming"...something. I'll let you know if the last 25 pages do anything tochange my high opinion of the book.
One of my all time favorite books. I am glad I was able to find a hard copy. A little beat up, but nothing major.
Shipped fast and product was as expected.
Will you people stop yelling about how bad this book is? It was her Journal that she published so relax dudes.
I'm in high school, and I felt like the claim made on the back of the book ("I wrote a book about you...") was completely true.Does this intend to be the next great classic? No. Zoe Trope wrote what she felt and what she experienced. I, for one, loved it.
The dedication page at the beginning of Zoe Trope's latest work reads, "For my parents: This is all your fault." Feelings of dark humor and teen angst are apparent on this single page, and that is what PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN is all about. Following the first few pages, the reader quickly realizes that this is not a typical memoir. It is in fact a story within a story within a story. First, it is the story of a girl's first three years in high school --- featuring her motley crew of friends, her feelings toward high school, and her newfound yet uncertain sexuality. On this touchy topic, Zoe basically discovers that she can't help but fall in love with everyone, whether or not they are in love with her. Second, this is a guide to the world of book publishing and promotion. While Zoe deals with high school, she gets her book published. She also goes on weekend book tours and learns that many people like her book. This discovery unnerves Zoe and creates growing uncertainty. Readers soon find themselves wondering if this uncertainty will continue to plague Zoe for the remainder of the book. Third, this is a story about the beginning of a girl's awkward and sometimes dark journey through life. Zoe makes some shocking confessions and twisted, yet occasionally true, observations about life. There seems to be many questions as to whether this book is indeed a true account of a person's life or a parody of an alternate universe. It is up to the reader to decide. I found PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN to be weird and shocking, which made for an interesting reading experience. I strongly recommend however that only a mature audience read this book, as it contains strong language and sexual references. --- Reviewed by Sarah Sawtelle (...)
