This is an interesting and challenging book. It is written in a stream-of-consciousness style, with the accompanying lack of order as ideas occur to the author. PDKTF takes on tough topics that face high schoolers, especially if they don't fit into easy categories and cliques. Zoe is striving to find her gender identity, and is open about her feelings and experiences, so this is not necessarily a book for all readers. If a reader is offended by language and acts of growing students/adults, don't take this book on.

This weekend I finally got around to reading a book that an 8th grade studentrecommended to me before Christmas. Please Don't Kill The Freshman, by ZoeTrope. It's an autobiographical novel by a 15 yr old author. She details theprocess of writing the novel, publishing, public readings, and so on. It's sortof a book about writing the book. During the course of the year covered in thebook, she also questions her sexuality, savages the public school system, and tolerates her parents. The book does not begin well, at least, not for me. I read the first 4-5 pageshalf a dozen times over the months and just couldn't get into it. Yesterday onthe train for hours, I got through the beginning which just seemedwild, undisciplined, and aggressively adolescent. As the book progressed, herwriting style, her maturity, and my enjoyment of the book all grew at a steadyclip. I'm about 25 pages short of finishing the 300 page book. I'll finish ittoday, but I'm already convinced that I need to give this book to a few kids. Isee the audience for the book as two distinct groups. First, teens of a specialnature, gifted, talented, frustrated, but not exactly angst-ridden, should readthis book. Second, teachers and parents who deal with such children would gainconsiderable insight from this rare and personal glimpse into the real life and thought process ofan extraordinarily gifted and self-aware kid.The author is not at all a bad girl. She doesn't smoke or do drugs. She is notpromiscuous. She doesn't get pregnant. She reminds me of just a handful ofgirls I've known over the years. She definitely does exist. She has a filthymouth, an interest in experimenting with her (bi-?) sexuality, and a sense of"becoming"...something. I'll let you know if the last 25 pages do anything tochange my high opinion of the book.

One of my all time favorite books. I am glad I was able to find a hard copy. A little beat up, but nothing major.

Shipped fast and product was as expected.

Will you people stop yelling about how bad this book is? It was her Journal that she published so relax dudes.

I'm in high school, and I felt like the claim made on the back of the book ("I wrote a book about you...") was completely true.Does this intend to be the next great classic? No. Zoe Trope wrote what she felt and what she experienced. I, for one, loved it.

The dedication page at the beginning of Zoe Trope's latest work reads, "For my parents: This is all your fault." Feelings of dark humor and teen angst are apparent on this single page, and that is what PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN is all about. Following the first few pages, the reader quickly realizes that this is not a typical memoir. It is in fact a story within a story within a story. First, it is the story of a girl's first three years in high school --- featuring her motley crew of friends, her feelings toward high school, and her newfound yet uncertain sexuality. On this touchy topic, Zoe basically discovers that she can't help but fall in love with everyone, whether or not they are in love with her. Second, this is a guide to the world of book publishing and promotion. While Zoe deals with high school, she gets her book published. She also goes on weekend book tours and learns that many people like her book. This discovery unnerves Zoe and creates growing uncertainty. Readers soon find themselves wondering if this uncertainty will continue to plague Zoe for the remainder of the book. Third, this is a story about the beginning of a girl's awkward and sometimes dark journey through life. Zoe makes some shocking confessions and twisted, yet occasionally true, observations about life. There seems to be many questions as to whether this book is indeed a true account of a person's life or a parody of an alternate universe. It is up to the reader to decide. I found PLEASE DON'T KILL THE FRESHMAN to be weird and shocking, which made for an interesting reading experience. I strongly recommend however that only a mature audience read this book, as it contains strong language and sexual references. --- Reviewed by Sarah Sawtelle (...)

While some people have complaints about the rawness of this writing (as it is definitely not the most polished of Nawal El Saadawi's work), it is an amazing piece of Arab feminist writing, that addresses complex issues like female genital mutilation and prostitution. Strongly recommend this for anyone taking a class dealing with Arabic Culture (specifically in Egypt) or Women in the Arab World. It's important while reading to remember that the text was heavily edited by publishers and Saadawi herself to more palatable for the Western view, and that several chapters and passages condemning western culture have been removed, leading to a loss of several important themes and motifs.

As I read this short story of Firdaus a woman on Death Roll in Egypt, I was struck by the number of books that this brought to mind. The format a single reporter interview that tells a transformation story was in part like Interview with a Vampire orStory of Little Big Man .The tone of book reminds me of Camus the stranger , and also Celine’s Death on the Installment plan. Her philosophy on freedom about speaking truth in the face of your own execution no longer being fearful strongly reminded me of Anna Quangel and Otto Quangel story in Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada all excellent books so is this one rather short only a little over a hundred pages but I think it earned 5 stars for unique insight and message.

I had read many books about life of women in Afghanistan, life's of ordinary regular women of lower class. But this books description of the life of an orphan, of a prostitute gives you a completely different understanding of the gender problems in countries with poverty. It is a sad story, but it does mobilize you to do something for the gender issue, and it arouses your inner desire to be an activist. It's a pity the writer is already quiet advanced in age and never succeeded to be a politician in Egypt.Gender mainstreaming government should be for every country!

The story takes place in the early 1970s. The author, Dr. Saadawi is a psychiatrist and consultant for the women's prison. A young woman named Firdaus is scheduled to be executed for fatally stabbing her pimp. Thus far Firdaus has refused to speak to anyone, but Dr. Saadawi breaks through and thus a novel is born.Firdaus is born to a poor family. Her parents die and she goes to live with her perverted uncle. He gets married and wants to be rid of Firdaus so he sends her to boarding school. She finishes her secondary school exams placing 7th in all of Egypt. Her uncle and his wife decide that sending her to university would be a waste of time as there aren't that many job opportunities available. So, they marry her off to a sheik, who's supposed to be a real catch. He's plenty old enough to be her grandfather, and prone to tirades and violence that cause his repulsive facial sores to ooze pusty goo. Prior to this "arranged" marriage Firdaus contemplates escaping, but realizing how limited her options are acquiesces. Eventually, the marriage becomes unbearable and she flees only to be "rescued" by a pimp. She goes through a series of pimps, and one madam, before having a major epiphany.Firdaus realizes she has been selling herself short. Drastically raising her prostitution rate makes her a hot commodity. Being a product of American pop culture myself this came as no great surprise to me. After all, some of my compatriots have been known to spend as much as $50,000 for a handbag. This concept of setting the price too high in order to raise the product's perceived worth in the eyes of the consumer is known in the advertising industry as "prestige pricing."Firdaus sets herself up as a freelance pro. She has a nice apartment and picks and chooses her clients, and has free-time to pursue intellectual interests. Before long she has another major revelation after a male friend, whom she believes respects her as an astute liberated woman, lets her know that she's "just a whore." She then decides to get an "honest" 9 to 5 job working for the government. In doing so she must drastically reduce her standard of living. She is in for a rude awakening as she discovers the subculture of office politics. Not only did she make far more money as a prostitute she got more respect. Putting out is one of the unwritten rules of the job description.Coincidentally, two nights before I read this book I saw a TV show about one of Nevada's legal brothels. The pimp, or CEO, boasted that their top "girl" grossed half a million dollars last year. That's more than 10 times what the average teacher makes (if not for the union they would make even less) and five times that of a nurse practitioner (HMOs don't mind paying this because it's still far cheaper than hiring MDs). Firdaus' story takes place about 35 years ago and I know there have been a lot of positive changes since then, but I wonder how many of them are cosmetic. Two days after reading Firdaus' story I came across an article about the human organ "business." (Buying and selling organs is illegal in the US, but entrepreneurs circumvent this bete noire by charging "service" and "handling" fees. Organ procurers can strip a body much like a car, fetching $250,000 through legal channels!) In China harvesting death row inmates to sell their organs is reported to be a booming business. Regardless of how one feels about the death penalty, once profit is factored into the equation look out! So, if Firdaus were executed today in China her body could continue to be a commodity post-mortem.This novella bears uncanny similarities to Lao She's "Crescent Moon." It's a short story in an anthology by the same name. A widowed mother is forced to prostitute to support her daughter then the daughter ends up prostituting to support the mother. Neither of them is named but, the daughters observations are very similar to Firdaus', so similar I began to wonder if Saadawi has read "Crescent Moon." Lao She was a casualty of the Cultural Revolution in 1966.The motif of the stalking and judgemental green eyes can also be found in Li Ang's 1969 short story, "Curvaceous Dolls" that appears in The Colombia Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature edited by Joseph S.M. Lau and Howard Goldblatt. Li Ang also wrote The Butcher's Wife. "Curvaceous Dolls" is about a young wife's saphic longings, not unlike Firdaus' feelings for Miss Iqbal.

Reaffirmation of something I already learned, accepted, and sadly lived with... The true about the nature of men, marriage, and all the other morality invented by men to oppress women... Even now.

I demolished this book in a sitting. I loved it! It is a very sad story but questions how we value ourselves as women, how life can be inherently transactional and what values we hold important.

El Sadaawi's novel is a powerful, poetic, and poignantly evocative. You will breeze through this book in a day.

Best: writing is generally good. Worst: overly melodramatic and depressing.

There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky. And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent. If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

It's funny. I have started reading this book four times, and only finished it once. I couldn't tell you why I stopped those first three times. The ingredients were all there, I just wasn't hungry. Now, reading it for the fourth time, spending nearly all my free time doing so and finishing up in six days, well I just can't see why the hell I stopped in the first place. The Blade Itself is an immensely promising start to a trilogy that I have decide to read straight through without breaking for other books (something I've shied away from doing in the past year or so). The writing is sharp, the dialogue flows, the world is detailed and easily imagined, but what really sets this book apart for me is the characters. Abercrombie writes some damn good characters. Interesting and dynamic, even characters that I was sure I liked, my opinion of them could be turned completely around with one action, one thought. That makes for a fun reading experience, keeps you on your toes.As fun and fast-paced as The Blade Itself was at times, I still have the feeling that it was largely set-up for what is to come in this trilogy. I purchased Before They Are Hanged immediately upon finishing last night, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

I'm VERY picky about the fantasy genre. I'm even more picky when it comes to books that are not stand alone. That being said, this is a really great book. The characters span a huge variety of personalities and none of them seem like stereotypical fantasy archetypes. While it takes a bit to really pick up speed, it is beautifully written and has a lot of themes you don't see very often. So that being said, I'm definitely going to continue with this trilogy. Joe Abercrombie is incredibly talented. I would definitely recommend this book if you are picky with your fantasy and are looking for something a little different.

This is actually a 3.5 stars. This book wasn't bad at all, but wasn't the best either. I'm interested in seeing where it's going due to that spectacular ending! My problems weren't grammatical, it was the actual story. Literally, for 60% of the book, you have just been introduced to tons of characters and they are just doing normal, everyday stuff. At about 50% in, I was thinking, "What in the hell is the actual STORY???"...these people are just doing things. Then the last 35% of the book, it got really good and had some brutal action. And it did end on a note, that definitely sets up immediately book 2. And I finally knew the characters and what was going on.It was interesting enough to me, to definitely want to finish the trilogy. And I believe after I get the whole story, I have a feeling that this could be, possibly, a 4-star trilogy.... don't let me down book 2!!!3.5 stars

I wasn't sure about this one by the summary blurb, but I've read over half the first book and it is quite intriguing. There's some depth to the story and characters; it isn't nearly as predictable as many stories. Yes, some of the main characters are difficult to love, but so it is in real life no? They have layers and history, as does the setting and story.Edited to add: having read all three books now, I feel quite privileged to have found these gems and enjoyed them. The characters take some getting used to, the story takes a while to develop, but there's plenty of action to keep you happy while it does, and the payoff is well worth it. A thinking person's "epic fantasy".

It is wonderful that Penguin published excerpts from the Rig Veda for Anglophones but this edition needs a thorough update. While the Rig Veda is one of the most difficult of the world’s great religious texts to understand, the introduction does nothing to explain anything about the origin, authors or cultural world of these texts. And, while the inner textual apparatus is helpful this does not diminish the need for a thorough scholarly introduction to ground the reader. Without such a guide, I can only recommend the Wikipedia article as a partial substitute.Furthermore, the selection of texts is highly biased towards the later parts of the Rig Veda. I can understand selecting parts perceived as more relevant for Western readers, but I believe more than 90% of the Penguin edition is from books one or ten. Surely, there are hymns of interest in books two through nine that could have been included to provide a more representative sample.I gave the book three stars not because the Rig Veda is not worth reading, but because Penguin could put together a much better volume than this. It has been almost forty years since this edition was published. I can’t believe there are not interested Sanskrit scholars who Penguin could commission to provide an update. Text=beautiful Edition=disappointing.

I am reading this now. I have looked at several other larger versions. These are accessible translations with excellent notes. Probably the best selection out of a much larger book that is likely to be available. Clearly the result of many years introducing this important work to American students. It should be your first choice.note: Potential readers should be aware that Wendy Doniger and all her work is being aggressively trolled by Hindu Nationalists on many message boards like this with calls of "Lock her up" being directed towards anyone who might have critical things to say about India. Probably should not take a copy of anything with her name on it to India during election season.

Doniger does as very accessible translation. Her translation choices preserve the meaning while allowing a flow to the language. I have a number of copies of the Rig Veda. I like Doniger's hymn selection in this version. The Rig Veda gives a unique insight into an ancient civilization and its practices.

I liked everything about the book! Wendy Doniger is sublime in her works. I follow her writings for many years now! Truly excellent! Paul van der Velde, the Netherlands

This text is:(1) An accurate translation of the Vedas as far as we know.(2) A product of Orientalism.(3) Relatively unpolluted by ideology (as far as the translation itself goes). This text is not:(1) A guide to how the Vedas were used in classical India.(2) An accurate commentary on how Hindus view the Vedas.(3) Complete.(4) A representative summary of the Vedas, although it does have the few very famous Vedas which Hindus would memorize even today. It's not a bad edition and I award it 5 stars. Ignore the commentary.

I should have read closer, it is only 108 of the 1,028 hymns in the Rig Veda. Disappointed.

Excellent book and excellent seller

Great product, good communication.

Excellent! Would definitely buy again!

Our golden Atlas we started training at 7 weeks old and he is the best well behaved dog I have ever had! He also looks to me and my gestures for everything. He is now 3 years old and we are introducing a new female puppy next week that I cannot wait to begin training as we did with Atlas. Re freshing on this book with my husband and I’m reminded how wonderful and valuable it is! Please do your self a favor and buy this book— everyone who owns a dog should read this book, at the very minimum the puppy stages and forming training/working period for maximum potential. The animal/mans best friend loves to learn and train, I really believe they feel more involved and happy with the “pack” us humans with correct training.

GREAT!

Trained my dog in college using this book. Great psychology for training and understanding your dog. I highly recommend. This isn’t to brag (just meant to show the quality of the book), but my friends often say to me that my dog is better trained than any dog they have ever owned. I owe my thanks to this book!
