This book is rather short at 172 pages. Its a Hewlett Packard sponsored book from around 1996. And it kind of reads like a sales guide or executive briefing on the three major PC Network file sharing services.Appletalk, Netware and LanManager from the three major vendors of the time [ Apple ][ Novell ] and [ Microsoft/IBM ]The author writes in a somewhat "amused" style from the Ivory Tower of a UNIX user. Each is treated like a foreign entity he likes to call a "NOS Program" adopted as a "UNIX process" that has a bilingual translator built in to handle file sharing services across the network.The goal of the book seems to be to provide a little history and perspective, and reasons why you would want to connect PC's to your powerful mainframes running UNIX.And finally a chapter that really seems to be a private joy to explain, the difference between Ethernet and IEEE 802.3, hint they're not the same.. and one preceded the other.This isn't a book about programming, code, or specifications. More a general discussion of history, values and over view of how things work and some encouragement to help a decision maker choose one of the "NOSes" over the other when choosing which of the "PC's" to support connecting to the big UNIX server.
