About the Author

Karl G. Heider has done extensive field research in New Guinea, at the Mayan site of Tikal in Guatemala, and in Thailand, France, Arizona, and South Dakota. He was a member of the Harvard-Peabody Expedition in 1961 that documented the Dani in the film Dead Birds and was co-author of the bookGardens of War: Life and Death in the New Guinea Stone Age. Professor Heider has contributed articles to theSouthwestern Journal of Anthropology, Man, Anthropos, and American Anthropologist. He is currently Associate provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of South Carolina. He has served as Chair on the committee of ethics for the American Anthropological Association as well as President of the general Anthropology division of AAA.

Babylonia had a significant effect upon the life, philosophy, and theology of early Judaism and, hence, also on later Christianity and Islam. Although not discussed in this volume, it is likely that when the Judeans were exiled to Babylon, they accepted the Babylonian calendar, begining the day in the evening rather than the morning, making the year start in the fall rather than the spring as required by Exodus 12. Also, it was in Babylonia that the Babylonian Talmud was composed.The Hourly History book is only 41 pages. It tells readers much about Babylon, that Babylon was a city in Mesopotamia and that there were many different Babylons in the same area in different times, ruled by different people with different beliefs and activities. Sumerians settled in the area around 3,000 BCE. The city of Babylon was around 60 miles from modern day Baghdad. The meaning of Babylon is obscure, but it may mean “God’s Gate.” One of its famed kings was Hammurabi who expanded the area and named his kingdom Babylonia. Around 1792, he developed a code of 282 laws for his kingdom. Many of the laws are quite harsh as, for example, “an eye for an eye” did not mean monetary compensation as the rabbis interpreted the biblical version, but the removal of a person’s eye if he cut out the eye of another.We read how Babylonia lost its power several times and then regained it. How in 722 BCE, Sargon of Assyria, who had conquered and ruled over Babylonia for a time, destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel, and exiled the inhabitants who became lost to history, the Lost Ten Tribes. But, in 612 BCE, Babylonia regained power and destroyed the Assyrian capital Nineveh, which is mentioned in the biblical book Jonah, and ended the Assyrian empire.Nebuchadnezzar II became one of the kings of Babylonia, ruled for over forty-years, conquered Judea in 586 BCE and forced many Judeans to live in Babylonia. In 539, Babylonia was attacked and soon defeated by Cyrus who allowed the Judeans to return to Judea, but most Judeans chose to remain in Babylonia as many American Jews chose America as their homeland today.Alexander the Great came to the area of Judea in 332 BCE on his way to conquer Egypt and the Greeks who came with him brought many philosophical and theological concepts that many Jews accepted. He conquered Babylon and thought to make it his capital but died at age 32 before he could do so.The book concludes by telling us that “One of the reasons that Babylon became such surpassing interest to European historians and archeologists is its association with [what is stated in] the Bible.” And this final chapter sites biblical references to Babylon. These include the tower of Babel, mentioned in Genesis, which may refer to the very tall religious structures in Babylon called ziggurats, and to the description in the biblical book Daniel how the Babylonians had festive meals using articles stolen from the Jewish temple.

An interesting enough summary of the 'life and times' of Babylon, but: describing the series of wars, kings, regression and rebuild becomes rather lackluster reading.The city sure had some ups and downs before disappearing completely.It seems as though the peoples of earth have constantly been at war somewhere......

A nice read about the history of Babylon. The actual location of many of the cities mentioned is rather speculitive but you are going back about 4000 years so that is to be expected. It is interesting to see how the shift in power happenes when each new ruling class takes control.

An enlightening read for a Christian like me. The final chapter with biblical references was good as several references in previous chapters raised my interest. Assuming that the specifics of that time frame that are in the material, names, locations, dates, etc, are correct, it gives a positive review of the writers. A very different view for me of what was going on in that time frame, +/- 700 bc.

If you're familiar with the Bible, Babylon plays a huge role. But that's only a small part of her story. The overview in this book begins to paint an interesting picture of where she came from and whatever happened to her. But even after reading this, the mysteries are deep enough to make one want to dig a little deeper into the various eras involved.

It presents a pretty good overview of the city throughout the ages with some interesting facts along the way. It is relatively short, so of course you’re getting the highlights.For many people, long books with this sort of material would be very dry, but the length is good and it is a fairly quick and interesting read.

Really enjoyed this history of the famous city of Babylon. Learned it was not just a single city that existed over centuries. Rather it was a series of rulers and people's over time.

Nice read and certainly gives a brief informative history of Babylon. Not the most exciting, but still a good read.

My child needed an ongoing supply of systematic phonics books that use an Orton-Gillingham approach. Finding them proved to be a nearly impossible, expensive task so I decided to write them myself. I want to share our books with new readers and their families. I also want to make them affordable. All books are available in both digital and paper editions. The most cost-effective version is a digital collection of five same-step books. The paperback version of the five book collections is a bit more, but is still a lot less expensive than buying the individual paper books. Due to production costs, the individual paperbacks are the most expensive way to buy these books. However, these books give kids a chance to hold a book and say, "I read this WHOLE book." Since every family will have different needs and different budgets, I am making the books available in multiple formats. All the paperbacks have black and white pictures to keep prices down. The digital books all have color pictures.

Great books for beginning readers! The story lines are fun and keep my daughter interested! I even enjoy them myself! Short segments make the concept of reading a "chapter book" fun, doable and rewarding.I love having the kindle version on my phone for when we have to wait somewhere! So handy!

Very good reader for decoding words. I have a hard time finding readers that work for my dyslexic daughter but this one did not end up leaving her frustrated and had a fun story line.

This is the first book my son has read on a Kindle. He struggles with reading, so this is a massive triumph for us. Thank you for a wonderful book, he finished it on his first attempt.

Great book for kids who love math or want to learn more.

I bought this for my son who loves math and building things. We've only gone through four chapters so far, but we've had great fun identifying how many right angles there are in his room and folding a oragami whale. This book was a real treat for him. Parents of gifted children should dive into this whole series with their kids, and I think they're great for teaching any kid that math is fun!

Last fall I purchased a couple succulent arrangements at Trader Joe's on a whim. I could never keep plants alive before, and was determined to keep these alive. Well, they started showing issues after a few weeks... and when the internet couldn't diagnose the issue, I grabbed this book.This guide is a great starting point for any succulent novice – all the BASIC information is in one place. No need to try every which way to google for your issues (what's with succulent care sites having awful search engine optimization??) and hope you've got the right answer. Turns out my issue was all water – I never replanted my succulents into the appropriate soil, so they were having issues with retaining way too much water even though I was very sparing with when I watered.This book gave me the confidence to expand from my two original arrangements to now having an office window filled with succulents – and a tray of almost 100 succulent leaves that I'm trying to propagate. However, it really is just the basic information. I still find myself returning to the internet if I want more info. The author's own website greatly expands on the book – but isn't the easiest to navigate from start to finish.I definitely would recommend this book for everyone dabbling in succulents, but hopefully future editions expand on the basic info just a little bit more.

Ive grown succulents for decades and thought this book might be very basic since its an idiots guide but I was pleasantly surprised as it is full of information for beginners and long time enthusiasts.

Excellent book for a beginner succulent lover. The identification section is great. It gives you a clear, gorgeous photo of each type along with a brief description. What I found most helpful though is that for each variety, the author gives you a list telling the mature size, water & sun needs, hardiness zone, & also what other variety it pairs well with. There is a lot of easy to follow guidance for choosing arrangement types and how to make them, best ways to propogate and general care. Although a lot of this info could be found online, it is so much easier to have it all in one place. Also, I read so many online articles that just left me confused. Not so with this book. It is very informative and easy to understand.

Out of all the books on cacti and succulents, this one is easy to find the ones you didn't know what they were, and how to keep them healthy, Lots of other info. Glad I got this one.

Terrific source of information and images. Beautifully put together. I dislike that it says "idiot's guide" on the front because it's just a well put together book. I got one for my 8-year old son who loves succulents and one for my mom. Everyone loves their books!

I am new to succulents. They are different from other plants so I don't want to disappoint them. I have several plants and so far, they are doing well. This book covers all the details of care so I am glad that I have it. I like the arrangement of the chapters which make it easy to find the part of the book I need at the moment. The pictures in the book are so nice you could frame them.

More for use in creating projects. I was looking for more of a reference book on succulents.

Beautiful photos, and great information. Fantastic book for a beginner/novice. I took one star off because I would have like to see more about hardy succulents.
