I am a second year medical student in California. I have recently boarded the struggle bus that is neuroanatomy. I have never taken neuroanatomy prior to medical school, and to say its overwhelming is an understatement. Another note - I own the Haines Atlas(9th E), this text, FA, and Firecracker. Professional students have a limited budget and need to find the most high yield resources. This is the one.I never usually buy textbooks because they suck. This is the anti-textbook. It actually is designed to be read, in order, and it is engaging, relevant, and interesting. The pictures are bomb. It constantly checks your understanding, references other section of the text (THAT MAKE SENSE AND ARE RELEVANT), and everything is clinically relevant. Finally, a book written by a clinician for clinicians, not researchers or academics. Purchase it. Read it. See how it effortlessly owns all other texts and actually pushes you to GET neuroanatomy to HELP PATIENTS, not uselessly memorize that the trigeminal system has 4 nuclei, or that there are 5 descending motor tracts, or remember some research extraneous bullcrap that fills the volume of much of our medical textbooks.Dr. Blumenfeld, if you are listening, can you make a trip to California to school your colleagues about how to write clinically oriented organ systems based texts and teaching materials?

Book is very well written, easy to follow, very clinically oriented as the title suggests. It does not have the details of a full neuroscience textbook the way the Purves or Kandel books do. As a medical student you need the more detailed neuroscience part also. Still, this is the 'go to' book for clinical explanations in neurology/neuroanatomy. What I don't like about this book has to do with the publisher, not the book: After paying over a hundred Dollars for the book you only get two years of online access, after that they want you to pay an extra $30 for additional two year access, seems like a rip off.

Great text to accompany the medical school Neurology block - although I would caution against reading the chapters word-for-word as it can be time-consuming and ultimately provide much more info than is necessary. I referenced this book whenever a concept or term came up in my studies that my lecture notes or a simple google search were unable to fully answer. Each chapter also includes practice clinical vignettes and questions that I frequently used to test my knowledge of the concepts.

This is such a great book; if you are thinking about it, just go ahead and buy it already. The case reviews are awesome; helps the material stick. Graphics are good quality and helpful. It was super helpful in residency, I still use it now. Great refresher on anatomy.

A good resource for medical school neuroanatomy. My school recommends the Nolte textbook, which is also good, but has limited clinical associations. For me, tying anatomy and physiology into clinical scenarios is super important in learning the material. Blumenfield's clinical concepts and cases for each chapter really hit on the relevance of each part of neuroanatomy in a memorable fashion. My point of concern is the length of chapters can be daunting, especially during medical school, so unless you thoroughly enjoy reading textbooks like me, it may be difficult to balance lectures, assigned reading, and supplemental reading from this text.

This is an awesome book. I have read about half of it and don't have much time to read the other half right now. I cannot wait to finish it. I know i will have this at my side long after i finish it as it is a great reference

Was recommended to me as a resident but the med students I work with have used this book in their anatomy course. Is a perfect mix of text, images, and case presentations.

Great book for learning and understanding neuroanatomy. Teaches (as the title suggests) through clinical cases in order to illustrate the concepts. Neurology is all about localizing the lesion, and this is a great book to learn how to do just that.

Introduction Mother of the Civilization of Love TWO NEW EVANGELISTS The genesis of this book occurred on July 31, 2002, the day Pope John Paul II canonized Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. We were both present that day in the basilica, but we had not yet met. One of us was participating in the liturgical event that he had worked to achieve for more than a decade as postulator of the Cause for Canonization of Juan Diego. The other had traveled to the basilica eighteen months earlier for his installation Mass as the head of the world’s largest organization of Catholic laymen, the Knights of Columbus. Both of us were deeply touched by our experience that day in Mexico City, and both of us realized we had witnessed one of the most profound events in the Catholic Church during John Paul II’s pontificate and indeed during our own lifetimes, an event that would give deep and lasting hope to the Catholic Church in North America. This may strike many as an extraordinary claim; after all, John Paul II is now regarded universally as one of the greatest popes in the twothousandyear history of the Catholic Church. As pope, he canonized and beatified hundreds of people, wrote numerous encyclicals on theological, moral, and social topics, and commissioned the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the first definitive work of its kind in more than four hundred years. He brought interreligious dialogue to new and unexpected levels while guiding the Church into the new millennium with the focus of hope in Christ. Beyond the Church, he changed the political map of Europe and the very course of history by helping to liberate nations trapped behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War and aiding in their cause for selfdetermination within the Soviet Union. Beyond Europe’s borders, his concerns for the poor, the disadvantaged, and the wartorn brought a greater commitment to human rights and democracy, especially to Latin America and Africa. But in Mexico that day, as he knelt and prayed awhile before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe after the ceremony, it was clear that he did not want to leave; when he rose to leave, he entrusted all people to the intercession of the newest saint in the Church. He had not only canonized a man of the past but also given our continent a saint for the future. Yet, early in John Paul’s pontificate, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico was an important, perhaps even indispensable, presence. In an interesting way, John Paul II’s first invitation to the basilica was not intended for him; the Latin American Bishops Conference had extended the invitation to his predecessor the month before, and it was only his predecessor’s death that opened this opportunity to John Paul II.1 In a telling way, it was John Paul II’s determined desire to pray at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and to personally engage in the meetings regarding the future of the Church in America that caused him to accept the invitation his predecessor had declined. (Twentythree years later, Mexico would see this same determination; shortly before his trip for Juan Diego’s canonization, John Paul II met with his medical specialists, who advised against his making the trip. But at the end of the consultation, John Paul II thanked them for their concern and concluded the meeting by saying: “I will see you in Mexico.”) Later, John Paul II would reflect on his first visit to Mexico, recalling that “to some degree, this pilgrimage inspired and shaped all of the succeeding years of my pontificate.”2 If John Paul’s pilgrimage to Mexico shaped the rest of his life as the universal pastor of the Church, his choice to visit Mexico first and his words commending Juan Diego as an evangelist expressed a new importance and new understanding of the Church in the Americas.3 He recognized the Americas as a hemisphere with a unique, rich Catholic history, and thus as a hemisphere with a unique, rich place in the future of the Church, a hemisphere with great ability to respond to and benefit from a renewed living out of the Gospel of love seen in the witness of the saints. It was in this context that a few months later, the cause for Juan Diego’s canonization was officially opened and the Church in the Americas was reexamined and given a new focus: the new evangelization. NEW SAINT, RENEWED DEVOTION The story of St. Juan Diego is, of course, the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The event of his canonization cannot be understood apart from the events of her appearance. As with any apparition claim, every detail of the Guadalupan accounts must be examined: each word spoken, each miraculous or extraordinary event that deviates from the everyday, the sequence of events, the character of the people involved, their reactions to the event, their lives afterward, and especially any lingering miraculous effect. For this, we begin with Antonio Valeriano’s Nican Mopohua, an account of the Guadalupan apparitions in 1531, the earliest extant edition of which is currently housed in the New York Public Library.4 The historical record suggests that Valeriano may have derived the information in the Nican Mopohua directly from Juan Diego himself, writing it down sometime before Juan Diego’s death in 1548 and within two decades of the apparition. Besides this significant work, numerous historical records recall in varying degrees of detail the Guadalupan apparitions, the miraculous image, the church on Tepeyac hill, and Juan Diego’s own life; some of the most substantial works include the Nican Motecpana, the Información de 1556, and the Informaciones Jurídicas de 1666. Other items composing the complex record of the Guadalupan event include written accounts, artwork, recorded oral testimonies, investigations, wills, and other works. Because Juan Diego would be the first Mexican indigenous saint of that time and place, the canonization process demanded extensive research, requiring a grasp of both the history of colonization in New Spain and preColonial culture and religion. Contemporary scholars, historians, and anthropologists specializing in the culture and history of Mexico’s Indian people were consulted, and nearly four thousand documents related to Our Lady of Guadalupe were reviewed. Ultimately, the knowledge and insights from such research have revealed the profound relevance and symbolic richness of the apparitions and the miraculous image on Juan Diego’s tilma (a cloaklike garment), showing how the Guadalupan event conveys in the language and culture of the Indians a message of hope and love. While the facts regarding Colonial Mexico cannot be changed, the perspective advocated by historians and even the public at large has changed. Unlike many scholars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, contemporary biographers and historians often highlight the Spanish conquest and occupation of Mexico as a volatile period of spiritual repression, conflict, and violence. By bringing to light the complexity of this period, contemporary research has played an enormous role in helping us to better comprehend—and even test the veracity of—the Guadalupan apparitions. But unfortunately, while the idea of “conversion by the sword” is now familiar, some people may view the Guadalupan apparition and devotions as a mere byproduct of colonization: as a strategic devotion fabricated by missionaries seeking to convert or pacify the Indians with a ChristianAztec story, or as a subversive devotion adopted by Indians who were confused or sought to preserve elements of Aztec religion with a façade of Christianity. Undoubtedly, the Guadalupan devotions were a cause of concern and confusion at some times, but for us this should not be surprising, considering how even today, in the Information Age, we often encounter mixed reports even on less extraordinary events. While in this book we wish to do more than judge and debate about the Catholicity of Guadalupan devotees, nevertheless it is perhaps necessary to address some generalizations about the devotion that often sidetrack readers from the religious significance of the apparition’s expression of the Gospel. First, to write off the rise of Guadalupan devotion to manipulation and misunderstanding is not only simplistic but also historically incongruous regarding a politically and religiously complex situation. Among the missionaries, there was no unified front encouraging the apparitions, as many missionaries doubted and even tried to suppress the Indians’ new devotion to the Guadalupan Virgin.5 Furthermore, while the missionaries desired conversions, their distrust of the Indians’ Catholicity verged on the scrupulous, even by modern standards; these same missionaries, some of whom were sophisticated letrados (theologians) in Spain, were known to hold off giving Indians the sacraments and to eliminate symbolic elements of sacraments that were too similar to Aztec rites solely in order to keep the distinctiveness of the Christian faith obvious.6 That is, although oversight may have occurred, purposeful theological contamination, deception, and obfuscation were largely out of character. Additionally, there was a whole range of converts among the Indians, including many who completely forsook their indigenous religious practices—but not culture—for a Christian way of life. What is more, their life as Christians went beyond practices or rites of belonging, such as baptism, to include catechesis. Likewise, the rise of Guadalupan devotion cannot be explained as a devotion taken up to appease Christianizing government authorities; after all, at the time of the apparition, many of the Spanish authorities in Mexico were themselves incurring excommunication, caring less for Christian life and evangelization than for their greedridden pursuit of political gains.7 The fact is, while the people in Mexico were involved in both political and religious changes, the Guadalupan devotion was not used politically until the devotion arrived in Spain, when an admiral in the royal Spanish fleet took up the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the battle of Lepanto and attributed the subsequent victory to her intercession. Moreover, even though in later Mexican history the image and devotion were appropriated to serve various political and economic causes (notably during the 1810 War of Independence), the original meaning and message of Our Lady of Guadalupe transcends the flaws and purposes of those who have turned to her. For some, Juan Diego may seem yet another individual “divinized” in answer to the universal human desire for heroes to look up to. This, too, reflects another trend of demythologizing the very men once lauded as great heroes. In this light, what is striking is how Juan Diego’s role in the apparition—even as passed down in testimonies—is already rather humble. While he was called to a significant and meaningful task, he was not called to a “great” task by any measure of earthly grandeur. His role in the apparition itself—his first and greatest claim to renown—was not a call to conquer lands but a simple invitation to intercede on behalf of one person by communicating a request to another. In essence, it was to vouch for and trust in another person. This simple act is the kernel of meaning and truth that is served, and not obscured, by the grandeur of the divine visitations, the healings, and the miraculous tilma. It was by answering this simple invitation that Juan Diego set himself apart; his was a gesture of humility, communication, advocacy, and trust, a gesture that we perform in less miraculous ways and situations every day of our lives. It is one of the most fundamental gestures of our humanity and the foundation of any society that wishes to live beyond selfish utilitarianism. THE NEWNESS OF GUADALUPE Consequently, although we believe the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to be a historical fact, we do not think that it should be consigned only to the pages of history books. In fact, in a unique way, the full radicalness of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s apparition can only be understood fully now, when Catholicism’s most expressed model for society is a Civilization of Love and its greatest explication of human dignity is the Theology of the Body. For at the time, the violence institutionalized in Aztec religion was not the only place where harsh practices could be found: the European justice system employed in Colonial Mexico and many of the “standards” of holiness among Catholics often included severe punishments and harsh penitential practices that still make us uneasy, even if the practices were less violent and more theologically different from the Aztec human sacrifices. What is notable is that this harshness is not corroborated in the words of the Virgin. In fact, while other Marian apparitions (such as those at Fatima and Lourdes) included words of admonishment or even warnings, Our Lady of Guadalupe’s only words of spiritual guidance are her gentle but persistent reminders to Juan Diego about love: a love that can be trusted, a love that gives dignity, a love that is personal. If we are to see in her words an answer to a spiritual problem, the spiritual problem it answers is a lack of love and a lack of understanding about love as relationship rather than as practice. The Guadalupan message is, in its originality, a spiritual education, an education in love. Today, as life is often characterized by a lack of love and by misunderstandings and misgivings about love, her message is one to take to heart. For this reason, like John Paul II, we think that one of the greatest influences of Our Lady of Guadalupe upon the history of the Western Hemisphere may still be before us. In the sixteenth century, Our Lady of Guadalupe became an expression of hope and unity for millions throughout the Americas. We are convinced that Our Lady of Guadalupe’s message is today capable of being not only an expression but a true catalyst of hope and unity for millions more throughout North America and the world. In the Christian sense, this hope and unity are spread through evangelization—that is, through helping one another to find in Jesus Christ the “adequate dimension” of our own life.8 A clear picture of how Christians in this hemisphere can approach this task spiritually can be seen in the triptych that Benedict XVI presented in Aparecida, Brazil, on his first apostolic journey to the Western Hemisphere, depicting St. Juan Diego “evangelizing with the Image of the Virgin Mary on his mantle and with the Bible in his hand” and inscribed below with the phrase “You shall be my witnesses.”9 To evangelize in the future is to evangelize from and through these first witnesses of Christianity. Historically in our continent, Mexico was not the only country to be changed by this Marian evangelization. As later missionaries left Mexico for the neighboring countries in the hemisphere, including to the lands of the future United States, their evangelization was defined by their devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. As John Paul II wrote in his apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in America: The appearance of Mary to the native Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531 had a decisive effect on evangelization. Its influence greatly overflows the boundaries of Mexico, spreading to the whole continent . . . [which] has recognized in the mestiza face of the Virgin of Tepeyac, “in Blessed Mary of Guadalupe, an impressive example of a perfectly enculturated evangelization.”10 For this reason, the pope continued, Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated throughout the Western Hemisphere as “Queen of all America,” and he encouraged that her December 12 feast day be celebrated not only in Mexico but throughout the hemisphere.11 Just as Mary’s enculturated evangelization overflowed Mexico’s borders, so it overflows the confines of the era and the culture of the apparition. For this reason, she is not only the “Patroness of all America” but the “Star of the first and new evangelization” who will “guide the Church in America . . . so that the new evangelization may yield a splendid flowering of Christian life.”12 Our Lady of Guadalupe is more than an event; she is a person. As part of her continuing witness to Christ, she continues to aid the men and women of the Western Hemisphere and lead them to a greater encounter with Christ. While two oceans may delineate our hemisphere and define us as a single community, the solidarity of the Christian life proposed by Our Lady of Guadalupe brings us to a greater solidarity, a global solidarity, when she leads us to a greater encounter with “the uniqueness of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist.”13 Through the Eucharist, believers of all nations and cultures find themselves on a path of communion. This communion finds its ultimate source and summit in the communion within the Holy Trinity. As John Paul II wrote: Faced with a divided world which is in search of unity, we must proclaim with joy and firm faith that God is communion, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, unity in distinction, and that he calls all people to share in that same Trinitarian communion. We must proclaim that this communion is the magnificent plan of God the Father; that Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Lord, is the heart of this communion, and that the Holy Spirit works ceaselessly to create communion and to restore it when it is broken.14 At Aparecida, Benedict XVI raised this conviction with even greater eloquence and at the same time emphasized its transformative power: “Only from the Eucharist will the civilization of love spring forth which will transform Latin America and the Caribbean, making them not only the Continent of Hope, but also the Continent of Love!”15 To venerate Our Lady of Guadalupe as Patroness of the Americas and Star of the first and new evangelization is to venerate her precisely as a Eucharistic woman, a woman through whom Christ came to humanity, a woman who experienced a unique closeness with the Holy Trinity. By leading millions more to her Son, and especially to her Son’s real presence in the Eucharist, she will guide the people of the Western Hemisphere to a greater unity whose source is itself Trinitarian communion. For her love surpasses herself, and leads us to the source of love, a Source which demands from us and enables us to love our neighbor without reservation, without hesitation, without borders. For this reason, Our Lady of Guadalupe should also be venerated under the title Mother of the Civilization of Love. According to tradition, after approving the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe over New Spain in 1754, Pope Benedict XIV quoted Psalm 147, saying, “God has not done anything like this for any other nation.” We may never understand the full uniqueness of this apparition. But through the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, we can expect to see the beauty and power of this event in the transformation of our lives and blossoming of our communities and ultimately our continent.

Around mid December, I was discussing Our Lady of Guadalupe with a friend. She was discussing both the Mass at our parish with mariachi band and a documentary she had seen that showed the tilma after the cleaning accident miraculously untouched on the image. I realized that despite being an American Catholic who should know things about our patroness in this particular apparition, I really knew about nothing beyond it happened. So I set out to find a book about this. This book's first half or so is exactly that, but then it takes a turn to be more focused on Mary as Mediatrix (never used the word but a light theological discussion). The second half did try to make it specific to the Virgin at Guadalupe. So I am not disappointed as I did learn a lot about the apparition and the tilma, but it was more than I had intended. But then a little dose of Mary as Mother of us all is never a bad thing.

This book is a really great introduction to the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The authors tell the story of Saint Juan Diego and the apparitions that occurred on Tepayac hill. The content of the book then continues to explain the miracles of the canonization of Saint Juan Diego as well as the scientific studies done on the Tilma. The point of Anderson makes is that the Blessed Mother going to lead her people into a civilization of love. I think that book is very well written and it kept my attention.

I had never read the story of this marvelous appearance of the Blessed Virgin to Juan Diego. The book was well written, easily followed and filled with good references. Amazing. and wonderful

While it can get a bit theological at times, Carl Anderson does a great job of ferreting out the details of the story of the apparition of Mary at Guadeloupe. Not only does Anderson objectively present the evidence that illustrates the truth in this apparition, he also helps us understand how God communicated to the indegeounous of Latin America, bringing them from their tyranical gods to the God of love and peace. It is clearly a great depicition of how we are being asked to communicate in the Christian role of Evangelism.

Great book has more information than I thought, though it's short of drawings and pictures which would help visualize the writer's thoughts.

Shares the research that provides historical details not often found - with actual sources and full footnotes. That is just one thing I love about the book. Overall, it provides the context for understanding the faith of millions.and hopefully, millions more.

An inspirational read. Well worth the time for someone of the Catholic faith or someone who wishes to increase their knowledge about Our Lady of Guadalupe. It follows with Church teachings and is worth the time to end you day on a positive note with this book. We have kept it and put it ont he shelf with our other religious books so we may return to it in the future. A must read for those of faith.

This book is very helpful toward a good understanding of the apparitions at Tepeyac, Mexico and the spirituality which issues from them. It enlightens the reader concerning the actual history of the events and applies this understanding in genuinely helpful ways. I highly recommend it.

My copy of "Redemption Alley" arrived Tuesday, Dec 5, 2017. I completed a very careful reading of this magnificent book Saturday, December 9, five days later. I am genuinely and greatly moved by this stunningly honest, incredible yet entirely true, miraculous story of the utter ruin and the subsequent redemption of the greatest bowler who ever lived. Until Sunday, December 3, 2017, I had never heard of Bob Perry (his birth name is Bob Purzycki). On that Sunday morning I was bowling with three men, two of whom were retired regional PBA bowlers. They had been giving me bowling pointers the past few Sundays. One of them out of the blue told me about a bowler named Bob Perry, and was insistent that I buy Bob Perry's DVD and his book. I ordered both from Amazon right there in the bowling alley through my iPhone. The other retired PBA bowler told me that one night Bob Perry had driven him home after a bowling match, and he remember Perry as a very nice guy. To my complete surprise, as I poured carefully and meticulously through Bob Perry's fascinating book I discovered that after his recovery from alcoholism he worked at, later managed, and eventually owned the bowling alley in Union City that I have been bowling at several time each week for the past several months. I had bowled in or heard of nearly all the New Jersey bowling alleys Bob Perry describes in his book. Furthermore, Bob Perry and I were born within five months of each other a long, long time ago, and both grew up in the same part of New Jersey. I have read a lot of books and can recognize a truly great book when I read it. This book has everything, and in my opinion will stand the test of time. I really mean that. I believe "Redemption Alley" practically screams out to be made into a major motion picture. I also think it should be required reading in all high schools. Before you read this book, do as I did and spend $2.99 at Amazon Prime Video to rent the 53 minute documentary, "High Roller: The Bob Perry Story". The book is especially meaningful after you have watched and listened to many of the main characters actually speak and show you some of the places where important events in the book occurred.

This book has extremely harsh language -- that reflects the life Bob Perry was leading -- so you've been warned. Most people who wind up in the gutter like Bob did never get out of it. It's an incredible story. I grew up in the New York area and was a bowling fan, but this gave some insight into the high stakes "action bowling" that I was too young to know about and even too young to understand. But I know so many of the names and the bowling alleys and can even figure out who some of the anonymous people were, even some of the mob guys. So I was interested in the book for that reason to start. Then what was going on in Bob's life is playing in the background and then comes to full center stage. My eyes were tearing as I read about how he was thrown out of rehab, only to go back to the Graymoor friars after sinking even lower, to have an incredible spiritual experience that touched my heart. I could not put it down. His "ghost writer" did an incredible job of capturing the details and the emotions. Kudos to Rodale for publishing a book like this. If you've seen the movie about Bob called "High Roller," it barely touches the surface. This is an incredible book and an incredibly wasted life that is transformed to inspire others, even those who have not dealt with addiction, to reach higher with greater purpose. I got more than expected from this book. There is hope for addiction. There is greater hope for the human spirit.

Joseph SchwartzFinished reading Bowling for the Mob which is about my friend Bob (Perry) Purzycki. Here is my take on it.Bowling For The Mob: A Memoir of RedemptionI knew Bob during the Bowl-o-mat days. I saw some of what was going on in his life and I was there during one or two of the scenes he describes in the book. I read the book in two sittings and read it aloud to my wife. One of the reasons was that I had always talked about my Bowl-o-mat days and always mentioned Bob. THE BOOK IS A GREAT READ AND A MUST READ FOR ALL. IT HIT ME HARD AND I ACTUALLY CRIED AS DID MY WIFE. PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME KNOW I AM NOT A CRYING TYPE OF GUY. BUT HERE IT WAS, MY FRIEND AND ONE OF MY HEROES IN BOWLING TELLING THE WORLD ABOUT HIS TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS. THE STORY GRIPS YOU FROM THE START AND DOESN'T LET YOU GO TILL THE END. When the Bowl-o-mat closed it's doors I dropped out of bowling and unfortunately I lost contact with Bob. As I read the book I realized how naive I must have been during those days. I didn't see what was happening to Bob. The thing that blinded me was his amazing bowling talent. This book takes you on a wild ride and you want to step into it and say stop! From the top to the bottom, back to the top and redemption. It sounds made up but it's not. It's all true. Bob is now devoting his life to others and once again is a hero to me.I LOVED THE BOOK AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT PEOPLE READ ABOUT BOB'S LIFE.First and foremost I consider Bob the best bowler I ever saw. There was something different about the way the pins reacted when his ball hit them. They exploded. There was no wasted energy in his approach. He once told me to imagine I was a plane landing on a runway and on each step I had to come in lower and lower till I released the ball. Quite a simple way to describe the start through the finish. But in actuality when I watched him that's what I saw. The only difference about Bob and other bowlers was at the point of release. He got revs out of that ball like nobody I ever saw. For him it seemed effortless. In a word GREATNESS.

Mera: Tidebreaker, by Danielle Paige

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-This latest DC Universe reboot reintroduces fans to Mera. The daughter of the dethroned Xebel king, she's a princess without a people. Atlantis has ruled the Xebellians for as long as Mera can remember. Though those around her focus mostly on her beauty and marital prospects, Mera's no damsel awaiting a prince-she spends her days training to be a great warrior and ruler like her deceased mother. So when Mera overhears her father say that whoever kills the long-lost Atlantean king will one day be the Xebel ruler, she decides to claim the honor, and the throne, for herself. Her target is Arthur Curry, a mild-mannered teen living with his father in a lighthouse in Amnesty Bay, ME. He doesn't know about the existence of underwater kingdoms, let alone his own birthright. But the two begin to fall for each other, making Mera's mission nearly impossible. What could have been a bland "When Aquaman Met Mera" love story is a powerful tale about the fruitlessness of war. Byrne's dynamic art uses murky blues and greens to evoke the Atlantic Ocean and coastal setting, Mera's red hair standing out. Paige devotes a bit too much of the narrative to the romance, and mermaid enthusiasts may be a little frustrated with how much time is spent on land, but hopefully later volumes will bring Mera back to the sea, where she belongs. VERDICT An exciting and romantic look at a lesser-known superhero, for DC comics followers and newcomers alike.-Anna Murphy, Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklynα(c) Copyright 2011. This has all the romantic tension of twilight combined with the origin story of Aguaman. Granted, I think it is better than Twilight, but I don't think I was quite looking for the start of a love story. Also, since I have just seen the newest Aquaman movie, I was alternating between thinking that this is a just a rehashing of the movie and thinking, wait, that is not how it was in the movie.Ok so that is all the negative I can say about this, because from there, it was a page turning read, the art work was very good and we all really like it. I love that the protagonist is female which is fantastic for the kids to read. I love that there was a minimum of swearing and violence and again, that is fantastic for the kids. And finally, I love that the kids passed it from one to the next and talked about it amongst themselves. Anything to get kids reading is fantastic.

Mera carries a lot on her shoulders as the Princess of Xebel, some pressure comes from her father and the legacy of the office, and some comes from within, the expectations she has upon herself. In a origin tale of sorts, the meeting between Arthur Curry, Aquaman, and Mera, we see a young person who is positioned between her prescribed role and what she wants for herself. I loved the design style and the initial premise of plot and character development, yet found the whole story arc lacking.Mera's kingdom of Xebel is the heel of Atlantis, and the people are none too happy about it. Instead of asking her daughter's permission, the king directs her betrothed to go to the surface to hunt down and kill the long-lost prince of Atlantis. Hearing this, Mera takes it upon herself to go in his stead. To challenge herself. When she meets her prey, she finds the unexpected, a person she could easily like.Character designs, backgrounds, and the whole aesthetic is awesome. Futuristic, yet retro and mod. But I found the dialogue tedious at times, a lot of back and forth between Mera and Arthur that may have been reduced. And some of the reveals turned into info dumps because there wasn't as much context built in at the beginning of the novel. Overall, a book that has all the parts of a good story, but the pacing and character development could use some work.

*I received this book as an eARC from DC Ink via Edelweiss. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*DC Ink is bringing Young Adult stories about DC characters to the graphic novel format! The first book is Mera: Tidebreaker written by Danielle Paige. Steven Bryne illustrates this story in mostly blue tones with highlights of orange for Mera's (and her father's) hair. This graphic novel tells the story of a young princess trying to live up to the model left behind by her deceased mother who was both a queen and a warrior. The royal politics of the underwater world is at the forefront of this story. There are a lot of princess tropes that Paige plays with. It's like if The Little Mermaid was on a mission to kill Prince Eric. This is a fun "fish out of water" assassin princess story. Mera thinks she has it in her to kill the Atlantean Prince Arthur and bring his head back to her father, but is that really the type of person she is?I give this book a 3.5/5. Paige merges classic tropes with empowering characters, but it could have had more of an original feel to it, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the other DC Ink titles. I already have downloaded Raven's!

I was really looking forward to starting this graphic novel as I am a fan of superheroes but it just didn’t live up to what I was expecting. The characters felt pretty one dimensional and when their part of the plot was done they weren’t really mentioned until the very end, minus a couple characters. The instalove between characters was another thing I didn’t like. I am just not a fan of it and it just didn’t work in this graphic novel. The plot felt pretty rushed and maybe that is another reason for lack of character development. I would have loved to see it spanned out more. It would have made for a better flow of things.Although the characters and plot fell short, I did enjoy the artwork and the colors they decided to use for the illustrations. The vibrant orange was beautiful against the teal blue.Overall, it lacked too much for me to give it a higher rating. I am sure others will find it to be a great read especially if they are a fan of superheroes and instalove doesn’t bother them!(I received a digital copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.)

I was so excited to read Meara: Tidebreaker I may have bounced up and down just a little when I was chosen for a review copy.. I love everything I have ever read by Danielle Paige and this graphic novel was no different. Plus I really enjoy Aquaman and Meara in the Aquaman comics. The beginning of Meara and Arthur Curry aka Aquaman's love story comes to life in beautiful shades of blues and greens and Meara's striking read hair. A teenage Meara, princess and warrior in training, resents Atlanteans rule over Xebel. She is also angry at her father's plan to give ruling of Xebel to her unwanted fiance Larken in return for the Atlantean prince's head on a platter. Determined not to marry Larken and to rule Xebel herself, Meara strikes out to bring Arthur Curry's head home to her people. Her heart has other plans as Arthur is too good for her not to fall in love with. A sweet love story with a strong female lead, Meara: Tidebreaker is sure to be a favorite and worthy to be read over and over again. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.

I enjoyed reading this book. Barbara Tuchman is fun to read. I read "The Guns of August" years ago. I have other books by her, but this one caught my eye and I read it in short order. I knew a lot of these things, but it's nice that someone organized them. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Jewish connection to Israel and Jerusalem, but more importantly to the evangelical Christian connection to a Jewish state and Israel.

Even in this early work, Tuchman displays her skill in threading through complex details without getting lost in the weeds. This story, like few others is fraught with prejudice and narrow readings of events and motives. Tuchman is slightly sympathetic to the Jews, but focuses mainly on the motives and cross purposes of the British. Their Imperial "chutzpa" is truly from a different era-it seems unworldly in the 20th century. And it has proved to be so. Left to be told, is the post Balfour period when it appears due to the mutual stubbornness of Jews and Arabs that reconciliation is never going to be achieved. A Jewish historian got it right - both sides are cemented into roles as righteous victims.

“The land of Jacob’s might and Ishmael’s wandering power, of David’s lyre and Isaiah’s strain, of Abraham’s faith and Immanuel’s love – where God’s mysterious ways with man began and where in the fullness of time they are to be accomplished – it also has claims on England’s watchful vigilance and sympathising care and already invokes her guardian Aegis.” – Colonel Charles Henry Churchill in his book MOUNT LEBANON (1853)“Jews are essentially a trading people. What so natural than that they should be planted along that great highway of ancient traffic … and in what more skillful hands could exchanges between East and the West be placed? … Syria would be safe only in the hands of a brave, independent and spiritual people, deeply imbued with the sentiment of nationality. … Such a people we have in the Jews. … Restore them their nationality and their country once more and there is no power on earth that could ever take it from them.” – Dr. Thomas Clarke in his treatise INDIA & PALESTINE (1861)“This is the ideal which chiefly moves me … that Christendom is not completely oblivious to (the Jews’) faith, is not unmindful of the service they have rendered to the great religions of the world, and that we desire to the best of our ability to give them the opportunity of developing in peace and quietness under British rule, those great gifts which hitherto they have been compelled to bring to fruition in countries which know not their language and belong not to their race.” – Arthur Balfour“It must be clear to every English mind that if England’s oriental supremacy is to be upheld, Syria and Egypt must be made to fall more or less under her sway of influence. “ – Colonel Charles Henry Churchill in his book MOUNT LEBANON (1853)“The consul represented Britain. What more was necessary?” – from BIBLE AND SWORD, on the prestige and power of the British imperial representativeBarbara Tuchman was perhaps one of the finest historians ever to write. Indeed, she is my favorite. Her book A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century enthralled me more than any other work of history by any author.BIBLE AND SWORD (1956) was Tuchman’s first published work culminating eight years of research. It’s the comprehensive and eruditely told story of Britain’s centuries-long preoccupation with the Holy Land and the Jews. The timeline of BIBLE AND SWORD begins with the agreed-upon fable that the ancestors of the pre-Celtic tribes which settled Britain had their origins in Asia Minor with the descendants of Noah supplemented by the myth that Joseph of Arimathea later arrived on the island to christen the land. Then the Arthurian legend was elaborated to include the Holy Grail and Excalibur (which was King David’s sword). But all was not myth and legend. The exploits of King Richard I (the Lionheart) in the Holy Land as a leader of the Third Crusade are history. In the centuries following the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290 by King Edward I, guilt over their shabby treatment became a factor. This, combined with a national grounding in a knowledge of the Old Testament and the Jewish prophets and the expectation that the Second Coming would occur only when Jews returned to Britain and to Israel (to be converted), evolved and matured with Theodor Herzl’s Zionism as the catalyst into the Balfour Declaration and the post-World War I British Mandate (which conclude BIBLE AND SWORD). By that time, Britain’s desire to provide the Jews with a homeland was rooted in the less idealistic but more hard-headed and practical need to have a stabile Palestine ‒ populated by a people governed, or at least protected, by the British Empire ‒ to serve as a buffer state to the Suez Canal, which itself was the shortest water route to India, the Jewel in the Imperial Crown. It’s unfortunate that Barbara never wrote a follow-up history of Britain’s failure to stand by its Mandate in the 30 years following its proclamation. During that period, the Mandate became unworkable; but still, Britain cannot be said to have exited with honor.BIBLE AND SWORD is a must read for any understanding of the State of Israel’s presence in the Middle East landscape.

l am a history buff and reading this history was very illuminating. I had no idea that from Cromwell's time forward so many Englishman were both enchanted and involved in Palestine and the Levant. Some were interested in getting a home for the Jewish people because they felt that had to be what was in the area in order for the second coming of Christ. They also wanted England to be in control of the area from the very beginning. They did not plan for it to become and independent state of Israel. Once they controlled Suez they felt they had to have people in the land and they might as well be some Jewish settlers. It was so interesting when the wealthy Jewish Englishman were not interested for themselves , nor were the same type of people from Germany , but the poor and desperate Jews from Poland and Russia wanted that homeland and the Germans and English did not want them in their countries. The whole history from the Norman invasion of Britian to Henry the VIII's seperation from the the Pope and the Catholic Church were well recorded. A long but great read.

Who hasn't wondered how the fate of this ancient country has come to bear on nearly every major political decision of this and previous generations. Tuchman's research and synthesis of the facts provide a startling picture of how England's early involvement in the Holy Land shifted much of the focus of Christianity from New to Old Testament. She shows how the early messages of peace and tolerance taught by Jesus were controverted by zealots bent upon recovering the Temple of Solomon. In many ways, the coercive and doctrinaire legacy of the Puritans is still the bedrock upon which extremist Christian sects continue to shape policy today. This is an important work, and should be read by all.

A bottomless treasure trove of information and detail about England and Palestine; Especially interesting is the time covered from 1800 forward. It gives a great overview of the foundations laid for the current complexities in the Middle East today. Tuchman is a fine historian.

This is the first book published by Barbara Tuchman and it is as good as her later works such as the acclaimed "The Guns of August" bestseller. This books relates the relation between England and Palestine since the early history of Christianity. It is a great historic tour along many centuries, Barbara Tuchman is a great writer and all that history is interesting and entertaining. She doesn't deal with the thorny questions of modern Palestine but her book provides a great background to understand that land and the peoples who claim it as their own. Highly recommended.

Like all of Tuchman's works, I pleasant read packed with information that stands the test of time. A good brick in the foundation of understanding the current situation in the Middle & Near East.
