Like its predecessor by the same author, "Thoughts without a Thinker" (1995), this book offers a conversation between the views of Buddhism and modern psychotherapy. (Epstein has been especially influenced by Winnicott, though Freud is not absent.) Part One of this book considers "Looking: Starting Where You Are"; Part Two, "Smiling: Finding a Practice"; Part Three, "Embracing: Releasing Your Heart"; Part Four, "Orgasm: Bringing It All Back Home." The topics on which Epstein concentrates are classically Buddhist: emptiness, surrender, meditation, connection, tolerance, relationship, passion, and relief. "Going to Pieces" is a simpler re-presentation of Epstein's earlier work: heavily anecdotal, this is a fast read, whereas the more detailed analysis in "Thoughts without a Thinker" requires of the reader more concentration. My preference is for the latter, because I know at least something about Buddhism and contemporary psychotherapy. For readers who know little or nothing about either, "Going to Pieces" would be a more inviting place to begin.

Until I read this book I expected more from my meditation practice. Now I am willing to simply enjoy the moments, the colors, and any revelation that may present itself. A truly refreshing perspective for those of us with a propensity to be neurotic.

This is the type of book that you can read over and over again and each time you read it, you discover a new deeper meaning. It's such a satisfying read. The most powerful message for me was - if you are feeling empty, then feel empty. Don't try to fill your life with distractions because you feel uncomfortable with the emptiness. Just sit there and feel empty because it is only in this state of emptiness that we can learn to be with ourselves in a nonjudgemental way and thus, discover our true inherent self.

This is my go-to order when someone close to me is having a hard time. And, for the record, I am generally NOT a fan of self-help books. This is not psychobabble, it is thoughtful without being precious, wise without pretension, and just an excellent calming read that is light on the "to-do" list angle but substantive in ideas to ponder.

This is the first book about the melding of Buddhism and Western psychotherapy that I've read. I'm not well-versed in either of these fields, but I found this book to be helpful and interesting. Though it felt a bit abstract at times, this book will give you an introduction to how these two fields complement each other. The author shares a number of personal stories throughout, demonstrating his journey along a path to satisfaction. I have a feeling that if I come back to this book after traveling along my path of study for a while, I'll appreciate it even more.

Although small in size, Epstein's book presents quite a powerful synthesis of Buddhism and psychotherapy. Amazingly, he brings clarity to the paradoxical concepts of: feeling whole by accepting emptiness; finding happiness by letting go; feeling more at peace by tolerating uncertainty; and being able to go to pieces in order to avoid falling apart. I've already read this book twice, and I have no doubt that each successive read will uncover more gems hidden inside. The writing is superb, the presentation is compelling and lucid, and the way Epstein is able to distill and integrate key concepts of Buddhism and psychotherapy is beyond impressive. Epstein concludes the book by reflecting on how his being able to incorporate the Buddhist principles into his life has "allowed my awareness to be stronger than my neurosis" (p. 181). May we all achieve such a state. :)

Has me thinking at every chapter. I think this is helping me understand my own humanness and humanity as a whole. This is something I recommend.

Good read and helpful. Not as interesting as some of the other books I've read on Buddhism and meditation, but a good addition.

I didn't realize it when I ordered it but it's not a hard back book. :-/ There are 20-25 spots per letter of the alphabet. Also places to put credit card information, network info, License Manager spots & notes.

Does not have protruding alphabet tabs which makes it hard to find the right letter and is not wired so pages can come loose.

Keeps all of passwords organized and in one place. It has an area for multiple items, including a section for additional notes. There is also sections for other items such as credit cards, software licenses, networks, etc.

I purchased this so that I could keep track of my passwords and have it available to family members incase of emergency. It is made of newsprint type of paper and is more flimsy that I expected it to be. I wanted the pages to be a bit more sturdy so that it can last a few years but not sure how will this will hold up with time.

I just love my new internet password book. It has big writing spaces. What more is that it just looks like a regular book on my shelf

It has all the organization inside the book I needed to keep my passwords straight but the bookend says: "Internet Password Organizer" and I wish it didn't so I could keep it on my bookshelf without someone knowing it held all my passwords.

Doesn't stay open making it difficult to write in.

I like that there is plenty of room to write and especially there is room for 'notes'. What I don't like it that is does not lay flat when opened and that makes it very difficult to add new information. I even tried breaking its' spine but that didn't work so you have to prop it open to use it.

A beautifully written novel that I couldn’t put down. The author has the ability to craft a story that is both honest and powerful, and demonstrates a deep understanding of humanity. Although it’s only March, I can confidently say this is one of the best novels of the year.

An epic literary novel. Covering multiple generations and spanning the globe from Iowa, Queens, and New Mexico, to Vietnam, Germany, and Latvia, this is by far the best novel I've read this year. The language is stunning and the characters are unforgettable. Good for fans of Don DeLillo and Dennis Johnson.

The novel by Mr Scibona is a difficult one to understand and really enjoy. The author utilizes an almost stream of consciousness writing style which I must indicate does not work for this novel. It touches on four generations of men; their pathways through life and the horrors of the war in Vietnam as it affects one of them. Vollie Frade is met at a point where almost on a whim to escape a bad home situation enlists in the Marine Corps. This is just in time to be sent to Vietnam where he witnesses the horrors of that war. On a second tour he is captured in Cambodia where American forces are not supposed to be. He is held in horrible conditions in prison with two other men and becomes the only survivor to escape and return home. This imprisonment does affect him through the remainder of his life. In a similarity to Winston Groom's novel "Forrest Gump" major events around the world are depicted during the course of the story and integrated into the story line. Unfortunately, I found that I could not retain an interest in the book due to the myriad of shifts and characters introduced with little or no interconnection.

The Volunteer by Salvatore Scibona is a generational saga, spanning about 100 years in which the effects of the Vietnam War are felt. Mr. Scibona is an award winning American author and writer of short stories.A young boy is stranded at Hamburg Fuhlsbuettel Airport in 2010. He speaks no German and it seems as if he was abandoned.Vollie Frade, nicknamed “Vollie” because he volunteered for the war instead of being drafted, forges his father’s signature to enlist instead of being drafted. Vollie just wants out of his home in Iowa and maybe even get a sense of who he really is.In Vietnam, Volie meets Lorch, a spy who recruits him for a secret government operation in Queens, NY. Escaping from Lorch’s clutches, Vollie finds himself in New Mexico and in love with Louisa. Vollie also raises Louisa’s son, a violent teen, turned violent man who himself finds a life in the military and keeps on volunteering for tours of duty in the Middle East.The Volunteer by Salvatore Scibona is a man’s novel. A book about men, the intimate relationships of one to himself, fathers and sons and how the traumatic effects of one generation affect the next, and even the one after that.This is a sprawling story, which moves through geography, culture, and time in a deliberate, yet non-linear manner. The author allows us to see how men see themselves, and how the mind works allowing the characters to wander outside of themselves into places which do not exist.The theme of disappearing seems to be a constant throughout this novel. Vollie seems to always try to disappear, he runs away to the Marines, shamed by his parents’ illiteracy, disappears from a secret government job, and even his family, but he always finds out, sometimes too late, that his disappearing act was often a decades long illusion. Vollie’s son also try to disappear, or make others disappear without really understanding why.The book seem to ramble on at some parts, soliloquies of the characters thinking, or society’s reflection upon itself. Taken in context though, getting into the mind of a character including the artificial walls he builds around himself, his memories (real or not) as well as dreams creates a confidential relationship between the readers and the characters they are reading about.

Scibona's second novel follows the experiences of a few men and women throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on one particular man who survived the Vietnam War. It's a book about war and the reasons we go to war—with strangers and with our families. It's a book about people who try to run away from themselves, and how hard it is to disappear in the world. It's finally about love, particularly love between people who are suspicious of love. The prose is beautiful and thoughtful; it'll make you think hard about what's important. The Volunteer is a novel that's brave because of how seriously it takes the challenges of living through recent history.

I tried, I tried and then I gave up. Scibona has written a novel which is going to be a love it or hate it proposition for readers. It starts off strong but then goes, at least for me, sideways. Vollie has some real issues, which became, unlike the plot, increasingly clear. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. A pass from me.

This is the book I've been wanting Jared Wilson to write for years. I read "The Prodigal Church" a couple of times. But it was more of a "what not to do" book. It was a critique of the attractional model of church ministry. This book is a positive sequel of a more biblical alternative to the attractional model. It is the "Deep and Wide" for the gospel-centered movement.This may also be Jared's most well-written book. Jared is a fantastic writer no matter the subject. And in this book his gift really shines. While the book is laid out by subject that is typical of most church ministry books, a story of the fictional LifePoint church is interwoven throughout each chapter. The story really makes the topics discussed in each chapter come to life while not making me cringe for seeming phony.I don't agree with everything in the book. My journey has taken me from the attractional church world to the missional gospel-centered church world to now the more confessional Reformed church world (I'm still Baptist though). Therefore, I'm not as convinced as Jared when he starts getting into missional church language or even his use of Johnathan Edwards' works when it comes to measuring church health. But I get where he's coming from and agree with 90% of what he says. And I find it all very helpful when thinking about how we do church.I commend this book to anyone at any level of church ministry.

It feels like we should be done body slamming the seeker-sensitive movement. Wasn't that so 20 years ago? Unfortunately, like the undead in a bad zombie movie, it just keeps coming back. And JCW's latest critique of the movement is as readable as it is timely.Split into a fictional dialogue between a disillusioned seeker-sensitive pastor and his staff and a more traditional, how-to format, the book is accessible for people like me who don't tend to finish Christian living books. I read the first few chapters and move on (with apologies to all my favorite Christian authors). So a little liveliness goes a long way in this genre for me, and Wilson's tone and style in both formats here are a breeze to read and understand.It seems to me this book was written with practicality in mind. Yes, yes, we all know the attractional church method is bunk---but how do we pull our churches out of that mindset? I pastored a church for several years that was struggling with this very question, and it's almost funny how well Wilson's fictional bits nail the actual conversations that go on in that kind of a situation. He poses important questions and offers practical steps, rather than just dunking on the Osteens, Stanleys, and Hybels of the world without holding forth some kind of alternative.I guess the big takeaway from this book is yes, moving away from man-centered ecclesiology to God-centered is going to be awkward, difficult, and costly, but it's also going to be worth it.

Helpful, honest, insightful, and challenging. Wilson’s writing is witty and palatable. If the always prowling enemy of comparison and jealousy speaks to your mind then you will benefit from this.

This is the book I wish I had when leading our church through a gospel renewal. There's nothing new or novel here. It's not the typical "church growth" book, with 5 innovative and simple steps to break the 200 barrier. Jared simply lays out the biblical alternative to the attractional "seeker" model of church, helping the reader rediscover the biblical priorities of faithfulness and fruitfulness. It's a reminder of what the church is, who the worship service is primarily for, and that the gospel must be the driving force of all we do, rather than simply be assumed.This is a must-read that is clear, biblical, practical, and filled with wisdom. I also found the appendices particularly helpful. The first summarizes the basic principles and steps from each chapter, and the second is a troubleshooting manual of sorts with answers to many "what-if" questions related to gospel-centered ministry.The hard part will be getting pastors to read it that don’t think they need to.

Jared does a tremendous job laying out the issues plaguing the modern church but doesn't just leave it there. Instead, he offers very real and practical solutions to the church leader in how to identify the difficulty with the modern paradigm, and how to fix what's wrong. He delves into the philosophy behind church growth movements, explains the Biblical corrective, and gives the fix. This book is so needed and is a very fresh take. Very well done and very helpful!
