K. ERIC DREXLER published the first scientific paper on molecular nanotechnology in 1981. He wrote Nanosystems while a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Department of Computer Science and continues to lecture at universities and corporations in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. This is the book that started it all: The basic principles of practical machinery built on a molecular scale. The book assumes that you've got a working knowledge of physics, chemistry, and the requisite fields of mathematics underlying them so don't expect any hand holding beyond the introduction. If you're serious about studying nanotechnology (and if you're studying it in college, this is probably your textbook, anyway) this is the perfect place to start.

Bought this title on the recommendation of an existing owner. Very comprehensive work, and considerably more involved that Drexler's earlier, more "general interest" publications.For those interested in Nanotechnology, and the underlying theory / practicalities / limitations, this would be a very useful introductory to intermediate level text. Makes a good "companion" volume to Robert Freitas's Kinematic Self-Replicating Machines (which whilst not concerned solely with nanotechnology, does have a great deal in common with Drexler's book). Excellent reference list so plenty of opportunity for further directed reading for those who might wish to proceed further.Overall, a "Very Good Buy"!!

It is rare to see an entire new field of study arise in science and engineering. It is even rarer to see it explored so lucidly by a single mind. "Nanosystems" is an astonishing tour de force.This book is not light weight. It is not going to be readable for people who do not already have a substantial background in the sciences. It is an in depth and extremely careful analysis of the possibility of the creation of molecular machines and the fundamental physical limits that technology faces. The pages are packed with well described calculations and everything is fully footnoted and referenced.Some people have criticized Drexler's vision, but is rare that the critics have actually read his work. In almost every case, he has already anticipated and discussed their objections in extraordinary detail. It is, in fact, amazing to see all the problems he has anticipated and analyzed, in depth and with great care.If you are serious about your interest in nanotechnology, you must read this book. It will take you quite some time, but the information you will gain is invaluable, and much of it is available nowhere else.My only criticism is that it is long past time for a new edition -- much has been learned in the last 15 years and it would be valuable to have it all collected in one place.

I was excited by all the reviews that said this book was for "athletes" and had a lot of information on how to continue exercising and strength training exercises you could do. I read through the first trimester chapter and came out knowing nothing more than when I went in.I am a fitness enthusiast, I used to do a lot of weight lifting, in the past two years I had given a lot of that up and have instead been running half marathons. I was hoping the book would have better advice for me than "go ahead and exercise.... but don't overdo it.... and don't feel bad if you don't want to exercise at all". What to Expect When You're Expecting told me that! I was looking for something a bit more in depth and specific! There were maybe 4 exercises for first trimester moms-to-be, all involving resistance bands, which seems to indicate that they're for beginners who've never actually lifted free weights. I have a gym membership-- I'd like to know if I can still lift weights, and if there are positions that I should be avoiding or things I should be doing more of. I'm pretty sure I should be working to strengthen my core for pushing out a baby (my core is noticeably weak from focusing on training for the half marathons and not lifting weights at the same time).The advice it gave was vague and unsatisfactory, and useless at putting my mind at ease. And if you've already had a miscarriage, all bets are off. The book basically absolves itself from giving you any solid advice, and tells you to go ask your OBGYN. My miscarriage was not caused by my exercise habits, but I am, understandably, a little paranoid this time around.Not the book for me, maybe not the book for other experienced exercisers, either!

I conducted my research before I bought this book and I was excited to find something that could support my current activity level through pregnancy. I have been going to a boxing/fighting gym for 6+ years (classes 3 days/week) and weight training on the other two days for 2 years. This book only addresses runners, cyclists and swimmers. If you do not mainly participate in these activities, I wouldn't recommend this book at all.There is a lot of conflicting information about what one should or shouldn't do when pregnant in regards to exercise. I believe this absolutely depends on your fitness level prior to the BFP. I was disappointed to learn more about round ligament stretching online and it's total absence from this book. Also, I am aware of not lying on my back in the 2nd trimester, but how else can I keep my core and lower back strong? Where are these exercises?I wish I could recommend another book, but honestly I'm still searching for information that fits my situation.

I worked out most of my pregnancy with my doctors permission, but I wanted to learn about the science behind working out while expecting. This book is a great education tool without being boring. Same thing after delivering and getting back to training. The author offers advice on how to ease back into a routine and doesn't put pressure on the reader. I also liked the motivating stories from other moms in the same situation. Why only four stars? The book only covers running, swimming and cycling. I'm an indoor cycle instructor, but I do many other forms of cardio along with weight training. The author didn't go into depth about resistance training during pregnancy and after. Also, the diagrams showing how to do certain moves need work, but over all, a solid book!

As women, we have been presented historically with SO much inaccurate information regarding exercising when trying to conceive and when we are pregnant. Not only did this book back up the claims that exercising is safe (and encouraged!!) throughout your ENTIRE pregnancy, but it provides tons of medical facts about what is happening with your body (why your heart rate changes, what's going on with your ligaments, how your kidneys change and therefore make you pee more). I learned more than exercising-I learned about physiology and chemistry of our bodies.The anecdotes from athletic women, while anecdotes, were extremely helpful.Also, this book didn't make me feel guilty, reminding you to "read you body cues" and explaining how tough the first trimester can be, so just hang in there.This book was more helpful to me than the old "pregnancy standby" books- you know which I mean!! I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants support in staying fit throughout their pregnancy.

Great book. I bought this for my wife so she would know what she was still allowed to do in terms of exercise during her pregnancyso she could maintain some level of fitness. Before you judge me, she asked for the book, I didn't give it to her as a suggestion. The bik is well laid out. It is organized by trimesters. Showing exercises that are acceptable for each. It uses descriptions and pictures. She really like it. It's very informative.

I like the nutrition advice, exercises, and the advice on what's safe or normal symptoms when running while pregnant. This book is for runners (I'm a marathon runner) so if you don't run already I would recommend a different book for your pregnancy workouts.

It's a light read, not as in-depth as I thought it might be. But it was often motivating for me to get out on move. I didn't like the kindle edition because it displayed some of the charts too small to read. If you're not a tri-athlete, You may find some of the specifics on the other sports cumbersome. I'm a runner, and I think the book mostly spoke to that sport.

A well written and beautifully written book. My son's school recommended it for a summer reading project. He likes the book a lot and I love it, too. We discussed how Adeline's "hidden" character and fortitude are inspirational. Her strength gave her the ability to continually hope. It is hard to read at times and I remember physically wincing. Parts of the author's memoir reminded me of a book I read, Under The Same Sky by Joseph Kim. Hope and desire for a life with love are strong, common threads. This book helped my early teen son understand the human need for love outside of his need, as well as how powerful the need for love is. I did not want to put this book down, so I read it rather quickly. My son also did not want to put it down. We both are inspired by Adeline's wisdom and survival skills. Her acceptance of her "position" pushed her hard toward high academic achievement, as a way to be loved and accepted by her dad. She is a hero for not quitting, for not accepting defeat no matter how bleak things were. Thankfully she had "everyday heroes" in her life. She chose their support and help--for that she was brave. It is honorable that she used her intelligence, talents, and painful childhood to motivate herself for a better life that led her into an occupation that serves others. Her writing talent is wonderful to experience. My son and I learned about the difference between the written Chinese language and the spoken ones. Her explanations and examples of how the written language is expressed in pictures made it much less intimidating to learn for me. She presented it in such a way that I easily learned words and phrases from her book. This memoir is also full of historical facts. The author takes readers on a journey to places and situations as though we were actually there.The book made me think and for that I am grateful.

Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of Unwanted DaughterChinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, tells her childhood story of being a young, Chinese girl living in an unvenial household. Her family was so abusive and unfair, you can hardly believe her story was a true story. Like the fairytale Cinderella, Adeline has an abusive stepmother, who she calls Niang, who is favored among many for her Chinese and French heritage and has a passionate hatred towards Adeline. Her own father, “treats her like garbage” and even forgets Adeline’s name. Adeline watches the rest of her siblings get treated generously, while she is left in the shadows. However, she hides her true heart and never speaks of the abusive home life to her fellow peers. Instead she rises from the ashes and is the top of her class in school. Knowing that one day, she will be able to make someone out of the beaten and bruised girl she is.Personally, what I enjoyed about the book was how the author was able to produce strong emotions towards characters from the readers. Whilst reading her story, I felt a burning hatred towards the people who would treated Adeline wrong. Or in other situations, I’d find myself beaming when Adeline triumphs. Her story was inspiring to read, and she is a strong young woman, who wanted to make a life out of herself, even though she is living in the 1940s. I would also recommend the book if you are wanting to learn more about the Chinese culture. Throughout the story, she uses Chinese dialects, talks about the ceremonies they go to, and the Communist government that surrounds her.

It is a nice book to read. I bought this book for my daughter for her AR reading. My daughter heard about this book from her friend and she decided to read it too. My daughter started talking about the story and characters in the book. This got me start reading it as well. There were some historical facts and interesting Chinese traditions in the book. This book sparked a lot of conversation between us. The result of reading this book, my daughter and I did some research about foot binding and we learnt more about that. It is interesting book, although it is predictable at times but it is enjoyable enough. My daughter said her other friend borrowed the book to read as well.

Poignant memoir of a woman growing up in WWII era transitional China. With a cruel and narcissistic Stepmother and an almost equally cruel, clueless and uncaring father she was destined to be a hapless victim. By hard work, persistence, some timely encouragement from other family members and kindly nuns she turned despair into triumph. A close look into traditional Chinese culture and family values makes this book educational as well as touching. Read it and learn what can be overcome and survived by determination and willpower!

A very tragic but powerful story. I bought this book because I'm a speaker and my signature talk is on the Cinderella fairy tale. I wanted to read this book as a resource for my talk and my two Cinderella books at Amazon. This is an amazing book. Your heart goes out to her, especially when her poor little duck dies and she is so rejected and unloved by her stepmother, and even her father and siblings. It ends on a positive note. Adversity often is the springboard for our greatness to come forth. Inspiring read.

My son had to read this book for school and loved it so much he asked me to read it, too. It's an easy read - I finished it in one day - and enjoyed discussing it with him. It's heartbreaking but a great look at other cultures and upbringings.

The thing I've always liked the most about Carlos Santana is his unique phrasing and at the end of the day I believe most guitarists are much more impressed with that quality in a guitarist than in any kind of acrobatic show-monkey type qualities like blinding speed, massive use of sound-altering effects/gizmos etc. I'm not going to name these "guitarists" but I think guitarists reading this review will know who and what I'm talking about. Another thing that impresses me in a guitarist is originality and a willingness to experiment - to try to take the music/genre somewhere new and to break new ground. For this reason, although I did enjoy the album a great deal I thought Carlos relied a lot on cliches borrowed from various prior guitar greats such as Jeff Beck and Les Paul before him but I thought he didn't do enough original with the techniques to make me go "wow!" like say Joe Satriani did with "Surfing With the Alien" for example or like Slash on "Appetite For Destruction" or even with his own previous work "Abraxas" which inspired me a lot more than this album and is still for me Santana's best album.There is nothing wrong with using repeated notes, tremolo picking, double-stop and unison bends but if it is used so much throughout each track here with little unexpected variation it just becomes boring and predictable and is not what classic guitar albums are supposed to be. Still, that said, this is still a strong album because of the other aspects such as the vocal performances and the great songwriting especially by the guests on the album. It's hard to go wrong lyrically and compositionally when you have the likes of Laryn Hill, Rob Thomas, Wyclef Jean and Dave Matthews writing and performing for your album and so although this is an overall good album for me it is just an okay Carlos Santana outing and certainly does not surpass his great phrasing and interesting work on "Abraxas". What he did on "Samba Pa Ti" for example still gives me goose bumps when I listen to it.This transcription book though ranks among the better ones that I've seen for accuracy as well as presentation as the font is large enough to make it easy to read along and play and the binding is thoughtfully done so that it stays on the page you want instead of folding into itself and doesn't come apart at the spine when you press down to achieve this although naturally it is not the optimal binding that musicians prefer which would be a ring-binding as pianists and guitarist both need both hands on the instrument and cannot afford to have to keep sticking a hand out to ensure the pages stay where they should. The only beef I have with this book is that the transcription of the final "second part" of the last track ("Freedom?") isn't here. Otherwise for those who wish to play as closely to the cd as possible, this book is the one to get.Not perfect but good enough.

I started to listen to Santana's music when I first listened to Smooth. The feeling and energy that Carlos Santana gives can not be found from the others. This book is really great. The tabs are accurate. You are not just playing Santana's song with this book, but also practicing your guitar skills. You can play the sounds what you listen from the CD. This book is not just a must-have for Santana's fans but also for all guitar lovers.

Santana and his great music are back. All I can say is that this book is excelent. If you want to play Santana's songs like they really are played, I recommend this item. The transcriptions are accurate and reliable. This is a "must have" item for Santana's fans.
