I get that this book is primarily for beginners, but it was incredibly disappointing even still. As another reviewer has mentioned, the tone seems extremely negative toward couple therapy (which is surprisingly, considering that's the book's primary topic) and the authors make it seem as though this treatment unit is impossibly difficult to work with. As an MFT trained at an excellent program, I specialize in work with couples and individuals and feel very comfortable conducting therapy with them. Of course, working with couples isn't for everyone, but the authors make it seem like all therapists seriously struggle with this population. This is certainly not the case. Please do not let this book deter you from working with couples, especially if they are your preferred treatment unit! It's not as difficult or as complicated as the authors make it seem.To all of the beginning clinicians out there, know that working with couples can be one of the most rewarding experiences that you'll ever have. Relationships form the basis of society and if you work to help heal them, you are making an incredible contribution to the world. For a much better supplemental training/reading experience, I suggest reading books and articles from Epstein, Baucom, Gottman, Gordon, Johnson, etc. instead. They are the true masters!

I am a counseling graduate student taking a couples counseling class and ran across this book while ordering my textbooks. It is a very good review of the the actual counseling process versus the theory books that I'm reading for class so it has been a great addition and review with a couples perspective. Glad to add it to my library. This book is also very easy to read in that it is not too psychologically esoteric - where I need to read the sentence over three times to understand what I've read or my mind wanders to what my cat is doing. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid reader of just about anything psychological but this book is one I really look forward to reading because it is so accessible.

I think this book is great for beginning therapists, and not just for couples therapy. It is an easy read and easity to go straight to the chapter that maybe applies to a certain situation. The only reason I didn't love the book is each chapter defines the mistake and how to prevent it. It doesn't give a lot on how to correct it after the fact. I had an issue of an alliance starting and wanted to know some specific techniques I could maybe try out to stop it and it doesn't really provide that.

Haven't we all said, "Whew, I certainly did learn from that mistake!" or "I wish I was wise enough to learn from other's mistakes before I have to learn by error myself!"? This book offers you a way to prevent mistakes in couples therapy and provides solutions for working with tough situations in relationship counseling. Ah, it is so much easier to hear someone else talk about their learning experiences. And so refreshing to prevent them in your own practice! Great book!Gail Olson, PhD, LIMHP[...]

This book was required reading for a class taught by an EXCELLENT instructor, who had a lot of systems counseling experience. This book is blunt in a good way, practical, and relevant, although it could use some revisions in order to reflect more contemporary terminology. This is a book that will stay on my Counselor shelf in my office!

The material is very help and practical in doing couples therapy. The topic are relevant and the research is illuminating. Their inclusion of issues of commitment, religion and spirituality give a well-rounded account of many issues that therapist face when counseling couples.

Turn Your Radio On is a song that I would hear as a child growing up and now as an adult. Learning the background of various gospel songs is an enjoyment and sometimes just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling recalling hearing the songs at church and the service attended (even now). The Al Brumley songs are special since we both were from the Ozarks and have a valuable heritage.

There is an old time country religious song by this title and I wanted to see what this book was about so I purchased it. To my delight, it contained very uplifting stories about people trying to break into the music business. There was a religious theme through out the book which I enjoyed very much.

Everything was terrific! Totally recommend!

So many songs have been crowded out from the list of those we sing regularly. But the 'oldies' have wonderful messages to carry us through today's problems and joys. Ace Collins is tops in my book!

Gutmann (politics, Princeton; Democracy and Disagreement, LJ 12/15/96) has edited an admirable work focusing on the relationship of the federal courts in interpreting the law. Supreme Court Justice Scalia's essay elaborates on his philosophy of textualism, an approach that eschews legislative intention in favor of focusing on the original meaning of the text to be interpreted. He applies this principle to constitutional law, arguing that we should concentrate on the Constitution's original meaning. Following this essay are brief comments by noted legal scholars Ronald Dworkin, Mary Ann Glendon, Lawrence Tribe, and Gordon Wood. Supreme Court Justice Scalia posits his views of how statutes and the Constitution should be interpreted; a noted historian and three distinguished legal scholars respond. Scalia, whom journalistic shorthand often renders the intellectual leader of the Court's right wing, sets forth the principles of what he calls ``textualism'' and others call ``original intent.'' To reduce a complex and subtle argument to a sentence, he believes that judges should discern a law's import from the words in which it is stated, not from divining the legislative intent behind its passage or interpreting the text through analysis of its historical context; he finds the application of common-law adjudicature to constitutional issues a threat to democracy. Apart from Mary Ann Glendon, who contributes a rather dry comparison of the techniques of statutory interpretation in European civil-law countries with those derived from our common-law traditions, the replies take exception to Scalia's method. Glendon's Harvard Law School colleague Laurence Tribe lauds Scalia's insistence on a close reading of statutory texts but contends that specific constitutional language must be studied ``in light of the Constitution as a whole and the history of its interpretation''; he doubts that any set of ``rules'' for constitutional exegesis is possible. Every American should understand the argument presented here. This is not really a book - it is a series of brief essays that address the most important issue in American law. How should laws and the Constitution be interpreted? You will always be glad you read this book!!

I used this book to expand my knowledge of originalism as I am preparing to lead a class discussion on the subject. The book provide an excellent discussion of originalism including fundamental pros and cons provided by leading lawyers and historians.

This is a great read for anyone studying the constitution, interested in the concepts of Judicial Restraint and Original Intent. It puts you in the mind of the Supreme Court Justice!

The description & order confirmation said I was to receive a "hardcover w/dust jacket" of the book. What I received was a paperback with multiple stickers attached to the cover.

This book was not exactly what I expected; it was better. It contains an essay by Justice Scalia about the judicial role in deciding statutory and constitutional questions. His essay is followed by comments by other individuals which, in turn, is followed by Justice Scalia's response. The most fascinating part of the entire book was the recognition by the writers that judges have taken it upon themselves to legislate and decide what government policy "ought to be" in rendering judicial decisions. Some of the writers seem to think this is acceptable and expected. To an attorney who has watched courts reach intellectually dishonest decisions in cases where there is potential economic or political impact (for example, one appellate court went so far as to render an unpublished opinion in one case -- apparently to conceal its dishonesty in letting a state divert millions of dollars from a state retirement plan -- then followed up a few months later with a published opinion by the same judges with a precisely opposite holding on an important legal question decided in the first case), the concerns expressed by Justice Scalia were more than theoretical. While our legislators may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer, at least voters can remove them from office or persuade them to change their minds. There is no such opportunity with unelected judges who not only can manipulate facts and law in their rulings, but can issue decisions that never see the light of day and thus escape public scrutiny. Both liberals and conservatives have plenty to fear from judges who believe that they are a law unto themsleves.

Excellent and of course very well written .. I highly recommend this book.

This book is not an easy read but it is an important read. For those of us who believe (as I formerly did) that legislators' intent should form a basis for interpretation of a difficult statute, this essay will help you discover just how slippery is that slope.

Short but very interesting chapter written by Scalia. Remainder of book is four or five different chapters written by legal notables about Scalia's chapter. Not what I expected. Thought the entire book was written by Scalia - disappointing.

I'm actually using it in the classroom, and I have students talking about life lessons that Bethany shares: about being good team players, good losers, patient, and courageous in the face of adversity. In addition, we cover reading comprehension skills, such as main idea, author's purpose, drawing inferences, paragraph types, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Readers also get to know about Bethany's family, which is so important to her strong-willed nature. She goes into great details explaining how her parents and brothers helped develop her courageous character to be able to sustain a quite "tragic" incident. Courage in a 13-year-old child doesn't come out of the blue. Family and faith make the difference. This book is good not only if you plan to use it in the classroom, it's to be read by anyone who wants to find out the true source of courage. No need for self-help books with this one. It's down to earth and her description of family life and community life gives us the basics for overcoming obstacles and being successful - no quick gimmicks here. It's well written. The vocabulary and sentence structure of the book are appropriate for middle school students. Highly recommended.

My daughter needed a biography for a 6th grade project. It was tricky finding a biography that was advanced enough yet still appropriate. This was a great compromise. It’s clean and inspiring and a real book that took her a couple of weeks to get through just reading at night.

Godly without preachy. Wholesome family feeling that you can feel. Down to earth storytelling like she was your best friend that you grew up with. Inspiring, sweet & funny. Wish I could meet her & her family. Takes you through the gammit of before during & after. Very interesting read.

Great story about a girl who lost her arm, because it got bitten by a shark. However, she never gives up on hope and in God, which is pretty impressive to me, because most likely teenagers would blame God for anything happens that they don't like.

This is of course several years old and it’s geared for young readers but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Bethany discusses the incident of the shark attack, her hospital stay and how it’s affected her life and surfing. She has a lot of faith which is what got her through as well as the support of her family and friends. Much respect to this young woman. A good, quick and interesting read.

This is better than I expected. The devotions are encouraging and inspirational. My daughter is a swimmer and several of the mentions of surfing can apply to any sport. I think this book would be good for any teen/tween girls, but is especially meaningful to athletes.

I was looking for an appropriate biography for my 6th grade daughter's book report assignment when I came across this book. She really enjoyed it and it was definitely age appropriate. The story was inspiring and entertaining. My daughter isn't a big fan of reading to begin with, but she really enjoyed this book.

Bethany is an inspiration to all! I'm glad I got this book and not the original. In this book she goes behind the scenes of her movie "Soul Surfer". At the end of the book she keeps a journal of the whole movie experience. From picking out the actors to the day the movie was released. It's so awesome to see whole process! I love how she was so open about her faith and just laid it out black and white, plain and simple. Even while filming the movie she would constantly tell the director(Sean McNamara) to keep her faith as the main focus of the movie. Not only did she want to be a inspiration to the world but she wanted to do it through Jesus Christ. This is a book for all ages. Even if she wrote this as a teenager she has the maturity and wisdom that goes way beyond that. I'm 22 years old and I found this book so compelling. I could not put it down! I to am a Christian and in this world we live in it so easy for girls to sell themselves out, especially being in Hollywood. Bethany said in her book that she wants to continue to stay humble and be a good example to young girls out there, even after being famous. How cool is that! Not only has this surfer shown how talented and ambitious she is but, she got to show the world that with Jesus all things are possible! Thanks Bethany! :)

This was a good book to read, I enjoyed hearing her story and how she made it through the experience and grew from it. Some of it was very obviously written by a very young author, but if she's telling in her own words then that's how it should be.

This book is well written and truly outstanding in that it explains all the pitfalls of grape growing but explains how to mitigate all problems and obstacles. I have not seen much of the information in this book in other books or in my internet research. That was my biggest surprise about the book. It contains a wealth of information in a very concise book, and it will probably will be the bible for growing grapes in Texas. The only "con" that I can come up with is that Kamas pulls no punches regarding the fact that growing grapes is no easy matter, and questions the reader as to do you really want to grow grapes, or why do you want to grow grapes. Once you get past that part of the book it is "pure gold" for any grape grower on any aspect of growing grapes. I feel like I gained years of grape growing experience by reading this book. I bought a second copy for a friend who got me into growing grapes...

To the vineyard owner in the Texas Hill Country, this book is invaluable. It distills, in a clear and easily understood way, all of the issues a winegrower needs to understand; specifically discusses the peculiar problems associated with grape growing in Texas; and directs one to more detailed information. It is that rare book that treats a complex subject with technical expertise while making the subject matter very accessible. If you are interested in growing grapes in Texas, this is a must-have book.

I would have liked to have a bit more information on vineyard construction. The book could have been much longer. Geared mostly toward larger growers, but still useful for the backyard grower as well.

Great book, learned a lot about growing grapes in TX, all obstacles and what to expect when growing grapes...

This looks like an excellent book for the home or commercial grower who wants to grow grapes according to the current agribusiness standard.However, I want to grow grapes the biologic way - improving soil fertility and encouraging beneficial organisms, including insects, to control and suppress diseases and harmful insects. It works for other fruit, and I'm sure there must be ways of growing grapes that does not rely on total destruction of native vegetation not only in the orchard but also in 200 - 300 ft surrounding the orchard. It goes against everything I have learned regarding biologic methods of orchard and garden management, since the rest of my garden and orchard depends on a diversity of native vegetation in the environment to encourage both beneficial soil organisms and beneficial above-ground fauna.

Jim is a brilliant fountain of viticultural information. Great read. Excellent information! Thanks, Jim!

The second book was even better than the first one. I was a little sad about the beginning and what was going on with Clarence but was happy that it all worked out. Wasn't too sure how it was going to come together but I'm glad it did. I was really happy with the introduction of Demetrius and Marquis they seem like they liven up the story a bit. I was a bit sad to read that Gamba may have to leave the story because I actually like his character and the fatherly bond he has with is sons as well as Abriya. I just found out there is a book 3 again glad that I didn't have to wait years for the next book. If there is a 4th one I may scream if I have to wait like the rest of the audience lol. But this was definitely with the read and wait for those that had to wait.

Finished today and I must say Abriya and Clarence's story is hotter than ever!! I wish that Gamba will stay and fight. He needs to stop putting everything on his sons. I think everyone is depending on Abriya because she is so strong. I wonder what her father wants with her, he left when she was a child why want her now? I was laughing when she punched Katrina. I can't wait to see what's next for Clarence and Abriya. Excellent follow up.

The book was good but needed more action. Hopefully the story is leading up to something bigger. The love scenes are still hot and steamy. I am ready to hear Abriya's dad story and why he is doing the things he is doing.

This was a good book...ready for the next!! I actually heard about it in a book club, I love it! Good work Leesha

This series has been very interesting I can't seem to book this book down.I never would've guessed that Gamba sons was the reason he was still alive.That pissed me off cuz 2 of his sons are dead because of him but I can't wait to see how all of thus unfolds.You tell the story very well and it all flows.Only thing is I hate the word cock nobody uses that word and it sounds so white and this is supposed to be urban also reasoning is spelled wrong alit in this book
