The DASH Diet for Hypertension, recommended by the American Heart Association, has been shown in studies to lower blood pressure in two weeks without the use of drugs. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy; includes moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and nuts; and reduces consumption of red meat and sweets. Studies from the National Institutes of Health followed 800 participants and found that the DASH diet lowered blood pressure as much as typical medication. This is no quirky diet--it's the way the major medical groups have been advising us to eat all along, but with a specific formula that tells you how many servings to eat from each Food Pyramid food group. You also get suggestions for exercising moderately, losing weight, reducing salt, and food shopping. Included are two weeks of daily menus and 62 recipes, with modified favorites like Macaroni and Cheese and Sweet and Sour Pork with Vegetables, plus innovative dishes such as Mango/Black Bean Salad with Grilled Shrimp and Sweet-Potato Chips (baked). The authors are medical hypertension experts associated with Harvard and Duke medical centers. Recommended for people who want to lower their blood pressure or just eat more healthfully. --Joan Price

For once, something that sounds too good to be true really works. Developed by the medical school staffs of Harvard, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Louisiana State University after a large clinical trial, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet significantly reduces blood pressure, cholesterol, and homocysteine levels through diet alone, and experts agree that widespread adoption of the DASH diet would result in a substantial decrease in coronary heart disease and stroke. The diet includes eating four servings of fruits, four servings of vegetables, and two or three servings of low-fat dairy foods daily. Fatty foods, red meat, and sugar-sweetened foods and beverages are limited. Moore, who chaired the DASH trial, and his fellow authors explain the history of the DASH research as well the diet itself and provide clear and achievable tips on improving health and incorporating the diet into daily life. Two weeks of diet plans and 61 tempting recipes are included. The steps listed for making lifelong dietary changes are excellent. Recommended for all consumer health collections. Janet M. This diet can seem complicated at first but once you learn which products are "low Sodium" and you come up with a general meal plan, you can get more creative ! It really got my husbands Hypertension down fast ! Another bonus was he actually lost weight without trying, he ate well and liked the tasty food !
My blood pressure is slightly high and my doctor advised getting a copy of The Dash diet. I am hesitant to take medications for something I might be able to control with a change in my daily diet. The focus is on lots of fresh foods, fruits & vegetables. This book is about lower salt intake, increasing potassium etc though foods rather than pills. The book includes food lists recommended, and many recipes as well. Seems that it may also have a positive effect on cholesterol too, although that is not addressed to any extent in the book. Looking forward to lower numbers at next check up.If you have high blood pressure and want to avoid taking prescription meds, I think this book is well worth the $8
This is a very informative book about blood pressure and the things it can do to your body. I/ve found that some drs will not explain all the things high blood pressure can do...they just say you've got high blood pressure, hand you a pill and say I'll see you in 6 weeks. Don't like taking pills, I need some info that we help me to live a healthier life. This book is good, straightforward and easy to understand. It repeates over and over again the effects of a high bp. But they go on to explain how they did surveys and studies on people (monitered them closely) and found and interesting results with the diet (food modification) these people were on. They also have menus (certain combination of foods working together) that is to help you lower the bp. I realize that exercise is not left out of the equation either. I'm borderline...and I'm heading back from the border and in a hurry!:-)
A fantastic book! Grounded in scientific research and analysis, this diet is great for anyone who seeks balance and healthy blood pressure levels. I highly recommend this book.
Well, mine was one of those very very very difficult cases for physicians. In fact in my family has been a tradition of very high blood pressures. I have been sort of a buddhist meditator for years in the aim to help my high blood pressure, and I look in Taoism to see if I could find any help for it. Almost three or four weeks ago I received my manual to lower my blood pressure in 14 days. The main problem I had with it was that I had to translate the 67 recipes into spanish, as I live in Colombia, South America, so I just tried to resume the philosophy of the DASH diet, insisting in more fruits, vegetables, less red meat, very very very little sodium and much more dairy products than we usually do.I decided to order the Dash diet manual the day I had a very severe crisis of blood pressure, 200/120, very early in the morning, even though I had been taking the days before maximum dosis of drugs for hyper tension prescribed by my physician. So just use it if you have high blood pressures, and you will see the results by yourself!!! It really works! Now I am just taking one drug, and my aim is to take none, as I had to suspend another maximum dosis of drug with dangerous side effects, as for the first time in my life I had a low blood pressure crisis.
My doctor ordered me to get this book. I didn't realize how old it was but the message is still just as relevant today as when it was published. This explained the way my blood pressure works, how to understand the numbers and how to get it in check. It also contains many meal ideas and recipes. The difference between it and a new book is that it still suggests using a diet soda or drink at your meals. Most of today's books caution against them.Anyway I'm very happy with it and would suggest it to anyone.
I am not a fan of prescription drugs if I can find a healthier and risk-free alternative. So when my blood pressure started climbing (was hitting 165/95 pretty regularly) at age 67, and my doctor wanted me to start on BP meds, I asked for alternative suggestions. He gave me a little flyer that referenced the DASH Diet. I did further research and found this book. I started modifying my diet along the lines book recommends, but not in a very strict way. The book also recommends a low salt diet, which I follow to the best of my ability, but do not cut out salt completely. My blood pressure within a month dropped back to about 120-124/67-80. I am sure that if I followed the book more strictly, it would be even lower. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Buy it and follow it. You'll be very glad you did!
The DASH Diet for Hypertension has been thoroughly tested and approved by the people who know. If you have high blood pressure, this book is a "Must-Read", and once you've read your copy from the library, you're going to want to purchase your own copy for continuing reference. It tells you everything you need to know about cooking with or without salt and how to avoid foods that contain excessive amounts of sodium. It's refreshing to realize that by balancing your diet properly you can even have salt and still lower your blood pressure!Plus - there's a double bonus! Those who tested and worked on this cookbook discovered that it also tends to lower your cholesterol and helps you lose weight! While they were testing, they found that in order to keep the study accurate, with no other changes in lifestyle, they actually had to adjust calorie intake in order to keep participants from losing weight!I could go on and on, but just read the book. You'll see what I mean.
