It's common knowledge that many people spend hour after hour staring at screens. In fact, many older children and young adults can't imagine what life would be like without being connected and always having a screen handy. In "Left to Their Own Devices," Julie Albright argues well that non-stop connectivity and always-on screens have made us an "untethered society," "a condition in which ties to people, places, jobs, traditional processes, and organizing structures in society - like churches and political parties - are being weakened, broken, and displaced by digital hyper-connectivity" (p.22).In this book, Albright does cover a lot of ground and summarize a lot of studies. Some of the topics include "the fragmented self," the negative social effects of excessive screen time, the detrimental way digital connectivity reshapes the brain, and the way screen time keeps people from the rejuvenating effects of being outside enjoying nature, and so on.Albright also expands on the "untethered" theme with chapters entitled The Untethered Adult, Untethered from Nature, Untethered from the Body, Untethered Work, and the Untethered World. These are fascinating chapters that explain how excessive screen time and digital connectivity often fragment people's lives in various ways. It turns out that being connected all the time actually disconnects us from others, ourselves, and the world. This is a very helpful book that is well researched and well written. Again, it does cover a lot of ground; it's not a brief book that gives you an overview. Instead, it gets you into the clicks and swipes of our hyper-connected - and disconnected - society. It does overlap with other books I've read like "Alone Together" and "How to Break up with Your Phone," to name two, but there was enough original material to keep my interest and lead me to give it a 5-star rating. Books like this have helped me limit my own connectivity and enforce limits in my house to keep my kids from the negative effects of excessive screen time. Read this book! It'll help you think more wisely about connectivity and screen time.

I've been working with computers for decades and there are things which I truly enjoy about the accessability: the ability to read and subscribe to many different newspapers without breaking my back on recycling day; the absolute ease and time saving of ordering online ( yea Amazon!!!); music and film streaming, being able to download a book to a device for easy reading and portability, online banking, etc. I find it saves me quite a bit of time which I can devote to other pursuits. After reading this book I realize what a rube I still am despite decades of ' hands on' ( hahah) experience! I had NO idea of the myraid of things happening on the internet so this book is very eye opening - if not a bit disgusting - for me. I would encourage any parent or senior to read it, and I am going to suggest it for my book club too. Yes, starting with our children and now our grandchildren I have noticed a greater connection to screens and the internet. I worry when our 3 year old can navigate an ipad so easily ( but hey, it's also likely indicative of why I can too!) Still I had no idea about rewiring the young brain and social isolation. We made a concerted effort with our kids to be outdoors ( of course easier back in the day by far) and also with our grandkids. There was some talk of having gone so far tech that some people are returning to pursuits of earlier days...things such a bee keeping.I'm enjoying the writing style and the information. I have to read a chapter at a time and put it down. It's an information rich book, much of which I didn't know about so I am taking the time to process the information. Also discussing it with my friends, spouse and kids. It does read a bit like a textbook - it's very interesting but it's so full of information one has to pay attention. It's not like a chick lit book you can glide through. As I said, I do recommend parents try to find time to read this book.

The information in this book will scare you silly. If your kids look at screens all day, you'll find out that their little brains are being rewired and that although you think they are looking at Peppa Pig cartoons, they are really looking at Russian lookalikes that are grooming them for nefarious deeds. Your kids will reject everything that is important to you such as family and financial security and live in "hacker dorms" until they are old and gray. I have to admit I enjoyed reading the book, but mostly for the entertainment value of arguing back at the author, Julie Albright. She presented a graph that she said showed how the rate of change is increasing for adopting new technologies -- that it took a long time for everyone to get electricity, but internet became widespread quickly. But if you look at the graph you'll see that when refrigerators and color TV appeared, they also took off quickly, so maybe it's more a matter of how accessible the invention is (electricity required a lot of infrastructure) and how affordable as well as how useful. As for the hacker dorms, this is the first time I've heard of them, and I will bet they are a phenomenon in a few cities and not widespread. Albright claims that many kids now can't read an analog clock or read a map. Yikes, is that true? As for the Russian trolls, well I wouldn't put anything past them. Agree or not, there is a lot to think about, as we all continually evaluate how much we want to be connected.

quite honestly i just couldn't enjoy this book much and ended up scanning threw most of it. it is not that it is badly written or not insightful, it is just too familiar sounding for me. lots of the info/etc. can be found or have been talked about online for a few years now. maybe had i not read a like book not too long ago, i wouldn't of found myself bored reading this book.Book is still insightful for the most part and i am not going to rate an author's book just because subject matter bored me at this particular time..

The Alamo Bride (Daughters of the Mayflower), by Kathleen Y'Barbo

Review

“The Alamo Bride is an exciting, romantic tale of the early days of the Texas Republic. Great conflict, a strong faith element, and Kathleen Y’Barbo’s extensive research skills and knowledge of Texas history make this book a fascinating read.” –Vickie McDonough, bestselling author of forty-seven Christian romance books and novellas, including The Texas Boardinghouse Brides series “Kathleen Y’Barbo is a Texan through and through, and a gifted storyteller on top of that. Her love of the Lone Star State has come through in so many of her books, but in The Alamo Bride, she brings all the legendary Texas mystique and history together in a story that readers won’t be able to put down.”–Kristen Ethridge, author of the bestselling Christian romances in the Port Provident series  “Kathleen Y’Barbo knows how to write adventure filled historical romance that will keep the pages turning! This book was packed with action, danger, adventure and of course, a bit of romance! I loved it! The Alamo Bride kept me on the edge of my seat, yet still managed to have plenty of warmth and humor from the characters. Fantastic read and a great addition to the Daughters of the Mayflower series!" –Ashley Johnson, book blogger and reviewer at BringingUpBooks

Ellis Valmont, a headstrong young lady of Spanish and French descent, finds herself nursing a handsome young bilingual soldier back to health. He has been shot before seeing duty in Texas against Santa Ana. As Ellis nurses him, she discovers the soldier may hold very important secrets- but on which side does his loyalty lie? This novel hit the sweet spot for me with frequent references to Ellis’s great-grandmother, Maribel Cordoba. Maribel’s story was told in The Pirate Bride, a wonderful story, also by Y’Barbo. Every mention of Maribel’s name brought flashbacks of that vicarious adventure and how much I enjoyed it. This in turn, increased my enjoyment of The Alamo Bride. Still, I think this novel can stand on its own if one hasn’t read Y’Barbo’s previous tome.I enjoyed seeing the relationship development between Ellis and Clay. Ellis is quite the spitfire (like her great- grandmother, Maribel) when she decides that she wants to do something. We see that same personality trait as Ellis deals with her beloved Grandfather, as well.I was really impressed with what a frightening time in the Texians’ history this would have been to live. Y’Barbo kept me feeling off-balance right along with her uncertain characters.Quotes:“I don’t believe in luck... The Lord takes care of us in His own way. If we manage to have something go our way, we figure it’s because it is His way.”“In times of war, not all friends were truly friends. And sadly, not all family escaped the title of enemy.”I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinions, for which I am solely responsible. I was not required to leave a positive review.

The series, for those who don’t know, is written by various authors, starting with Kimberley Woodlouse’s novel titled The Mayflower Bide. Following that there are the five novels: The Pirate Bride, The Captured Bride, The Patriot Bride, The Cumberland Bride, The Liberty Bride, and coming in April 2019 is The Golden Bride. Each novel is unique and filled with adventure, mystery, and romance along with faith of the characters.Every one of the previously listed stories I have read and enjoyed for different reasons. The Alamo Bride took me a few chapters to become engaged but was still worth reading. Here, the lead female character is known mainly by her shortened named Ellis. Her personality is one of stubbornness, strength, knowledge of herbs and healing along with courage. The story is not set when the battle of the Alamo is taking place. Readers will be lured into the story by a man from New Orleans who is on a presidential mission. However, harm comes to him and not only is his life in danger but so is concluding the mission. Ellis and her family don’t know if they can trust this man, as he is having memory issues and they aren’t sure which side he stands with, Santa Anna or those loyal to Texas. The book was for hard to get into but once I did, it was good. I thought the story would take place at the Alamo and during the fighting. There are individual skirmishes, but the tale focuses on Ellis and the man who has a mission. It is worth reading and enjoying, and I look forward to the last book in the series to see how this is all going to conclude!

This is Kathleen Y'Barro's second book in the enjoyable "Daughters of the Mayflower" series. It begins with the fictional family tree, linking this story to the others, a letter to readers about background, and Psalm 91--which is also woven throughout the adventure. The reader soaks up Texas history and setting back in the 1830s while being caught up in an intriquing drama. The book ends with "Bent History: The Rest of the Story."

I have read a few books in this series and unfortunately this one is my least favorite, which is surprising because my favorite was The Pirate Bride by the same author. Our main characters Ellis and Clay are both great but unfortunately there’s very little going on in the story. For about half the book Clay is recovering from injuries and Ellis is taking care of him. As a young woman she is obviously wary of this stranger and suspicious of his loyalties. About two thirds of the way in the book they finally trust each other and head out to find Ellis’ brother who is believed to be taken captive. Ellis has a delightful grandfather who was a fun character but there is no way he would allow the two of them to head out together. It would have been a violation of propriety and he very much believed in protecting her reputation. I wish there had been a better plot point for this. After setting out they are very quickly separated and the story moves quickly with battles mentioned at too rapid a pace to follow. There is very little to learn in the way of history in this book. It’s not boring but not exactly riveting if that makes sense. I wish these characters could have had a more interesting story because they are both solid characters. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Bought this for a friend interested in joining the Freemasons, something that cannot be taken lightly. It is an excellent introduction to the craft. Like most of the "Dummies" series, it's also a great read and reference. I found much information that was a refresher to me, a Mason of 15 years and quite a few things that were absolutely new! Had to buy one for myself, both a Kindle version and the hard copy!

This book was recommended to me by a friend. He explained it would give me lots of valuable insight to what Freemasonry is all about and explain many of the things existing members just take for granted and forget to teach a newbie. He was absolutely correct. As I've progressed through the degrees, my mentor has been surprised at my understanding and grasp of symbolism he was supposed to teach me.I like the Dummies series. They are always well written, well organized and present their topic with humor. This one is no different.I can highly recommend this one to new brothers, or anyone who wants the real story on what goes on in Masonry. Mr. Hodapp is a Mason and as such, he doesn't reveal the really secret things like handclasps and such. But, that doesn't make this book any less valuable.

Gives a complete picture;background, history, and lots of extras other books don't give you without revealing the private aspects of the ritual. This is a great book, as other reviews have said, for anyone (mason or not) wanting to learn more about freemasonry. I read cover to cover and will continue to use this as a reference tool as this book is perfectly suited for either purpose.

Good book for anyone interested in finding out the real story of Freemasonry. My son and I became Freemasons together and we are going through the degrees. We will get our master mason degree in a week and a half. This book has been good reference.

As a person seeking information before becoming a Mason, I read this book and was given alot of useful information, debunking a lot of myths, if you are thinking of becoming a Mason this should be a must read, and for new masons to further their understanding of Masonry

Great book for those who are interested in the craft or have just petitioned or even been initiated and are a EA. This book is written by a Brother who has been and is still very active in the craft. It answered a lot of questions I had. Thank you for one of many great books Brother Hodapp.

I've learned a lot from this book. As an outsider that has no affiliation with the masons, I really appreciated that it was written by someone involved. It addressed ridiculous conspiracy theories, and gave you a great look at the history of the freemasons. I've had a chance to discuss this book with a friend that is a Mason and he was impressed with my understanding of things.

To begin with, I am not a Mason. However, I had many questions (prior to reading this book) that have now been addressed to my satisfaction. In fact, it's such a well-written book, that it brought to my attention things that I hadn't considered. It was at a friend's suggestion, who is a Mason, that I picked up this book to understand the fraternity a little bit better. In the simplest terms, Freemasonry is very much a FRATERNITY in the most noblest sense of the word. Unlike the drunken brawls typically associated with college fraternities when the word "fraternity" is spoken, which also summons imagery of a unkempt and dirty "frat houses", Freemasonry, as portrayed in this text, is nothing of the sort.As you might guess, I am considering petitioning (or asking) to become a Mason, which is something each individual must do of his own free volition. As I understand it, the fraternity does NOT extend an invitation to a man that he join the (local) Masonic lodge or the fraternity as a whole. I like this.To become a Mason, each man must decide for himself if this is an organization he wishes to associate himself with. Also, does the fraternity/lodge wish to associate with YOU. Are you a "good" man of reputable character and seeking moral and ethical improvement? This thing is a two-way street.Another major point of concern for me was whether Freemasonry is a religion. It is NOT a religion, but does place emphasis on acknowledgement of God as the supreme guiding force in one's life and that one should keep to the proverbial "straight and narrow" of one's faith (i.e., church, synagogue, etc.) - in other words, one MUST embrace the morality and ethical teaching within the tenets of one's own personal faith, and as such, be held accountable to those things by one's Brothers in the Lodge. Personally, I really like that as well. From what I read, if an individual Mason's conduct becomes questionable and inappropriate, after joining the fraternity, in regard to ethical and moral standards set forth by the Grand Lodge in one's jurisdiction, he can be permanently dismissed, disassociated, or terminated from the fraternity. This is usually a last resort, after having been given an opportunity to mend his ways and correct his behavior. The author has done a very good job in explaining a lot of the history and practices of freemasons around the world, but especially as it pertains to freemasonry in the United States and United Kingdom. I encourage anyone to pick up a copy of this book, as it is a marvelous starting point for addressing many of the concerns (and misunderstandings) people have regarding ceremonies, charities, appendant / related organizations, ethics, conspiracy theories, hoaxes, etc.
